The Consulate-General of the United Kingdom in Saint Petersburg was part of the diplomatic mission of the United Kingdom in the Russian Federation, before it was shut down. It was located on in Tsentralny District. The current British Consul General in Saint Petersburg was Sangeeta Ahuja, she was appointed to the post in February 2017, and arrived there in December of the same year. History As the Russian Federation replaced the Soviet Union, the British Consulate-General in St. Petersburg was re-opened, and Barbara Hay was appointed as its first new Consul-General in 1992. In response to the UK's decision to expel 23 Russian diplomats following the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal, Russia expelled 23 British diplomats, closed the British Council in Russia and closed the Consulate-General. Tsentralny District (russian: Центра́льный райо́н) is a district of the federal city of St. Petersburg, Russia. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 214,625; down from 236,856 recorded in the 2002 Census. Barbara Hay
Dame Barbara Logan Hay (born 20 January 1953) is a British diplomat who served as Consul-General in Los Angeles from July 2009 to August 2013. Educated at Boroughmuir Senior Secondary School in Edinburgh Hay joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1971 as a visa clerk. Hay had started learning Russian at school and continued her training in Russian by spending a year at the Defence School of Languages in Beaconsfield. Hay was posted to the Embassy in Moscow in 1975 as a Third Secretary, transferring to Johannesburg as Vice Consul in 1978. After some time in London, Hay worked in Montreal from 1985 as Vice Consul and Commercial lead, before returning to Moscow, now as First Secretary for Information in 1988. Poisoning Of Sergei And Yulia Skripal
On 4 March 2018, Sergei Skripal, a former Russian military officer and double agent for the British intelligence agencies, and his daughter, Yulia Skripal, were poisoned in the city of Salisbury, England. According to UK sources and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), they were poisoned by means of a Novichok nerve agent. Both Sergei and Yulia Skripal spent several weeks in hospital in critical condition, before being discharged. A police officer, Nick Bailey, was also taken into intensive care after attending the incident, and was later discharged. The British government accused Russia of attempted murder and announced a series of punitive measures against Russia, including the expulsion of diplomats.
