Construction Trade Union
The Construction Trade Union ( fi, Rakennusliitto) is a trade union representing workers in the construction industry in Finland. The union was founded in 1924, when the Finnish Painters' Union merged with the Finnish Stonemasons' Union, the Finnish Union of Civil and Road Construction Workers, and sections of the Finnish Woodworkers' Union and the Finnish Union of Sawmill, Transportation and General Workers. Initially affiliated to the Finnish Trade Union Federation, from 1930, it was affiliated to the Finnish Federation of Trade Unions. The union gained a reputation for being on the left wing of the labour movement, and after World War II, it affiliated to the Trade Union International of Building, Wood, Building Materials and Allied Industries. For many years, it hosted the international's headquarters, and many of its presidents also served as general secretary of the international. Finnish Trade Union Federation
Finnish Trade Union Federation ( fi, Suomen Ammattijärjestö, SAJ, sv, Finlands Landsorganisation, FLO) was the first central organisation of trade unions in Finland, established in 1907. It was a part of the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP), all union members were also party members. Finnish Federation Of Trade Unions
The Finnish Federation of Trade Unions ( fi, Suomen Ammattiyhdistysten Keskusliitto, SAK) was a national trade union centre in Finland. The federation was established in 1930, after the Finnish Trade Union Federation (SAJ) was banned. Its initial affiliates were unions which supported the Social Democratic Party of Finland, whereas the SAJ had been dominated by communists. Over time, the communists became prominent in the SAK, and this led a group of unions to split away in 1960 and form a new Finnish Trade Union Federation (SAJ). Aarne Saarinen
Aarne Armas Saarinen (5 December 1913 – 13 April 2004) was a Finnish politician and a trade union leader, who was a member of the Parliament of Finland for the People's Democratic League. He was also the leader of the Communist-led Construction Trade Union 1954–1966, the chairman of the Communist Party of Finland 1966–1982 and the vice-chairman of the People's Democratic League 1976–1985. Political views Saarinen was a stonemason who joined the local labor union branch in 1934. During World War II he fought for the Finnish troops. Saarinen was later known as one of the most prominent Communist leaders outside the Eastern Bloc. He was considered as a Eurocommunist who had sceptical views over the Soviet Union. Erkki Salomaa
Erkki Salomaa (16 October 1917 – 11 November 1971) was a Finnish communist activist, researcher and trade union leader. Born in Jyväskylä, Salomaa was brought up by his grandmother, in Tampere. He began working as a glazier when he was 14 years old, and studied part-time at the Workers' Academy and then the University of Tampere. Salomaa became active in the Finnish Communist Party (SKP), and was imprisoned from 1940 until 1944 for his activity in the Workers' Front movement. After the war, he became prominent in the Construction Trade Union. In 1947, he published the ''Trade Union Book, Part 1'', intended as a university-level guide to the trade union movement.
