Constable Burton
Constable Burton is a village and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. It is east of Leyburn. History The village takes its name from ‘Burton’, meaning a fortified settlement in Old English, and ‘Constable’ as in 1100 it was granted to Roald, the Chief Constable for the Earl of Richmond. Constable Burton was mentioned in Domesday Book in 1086 as being in the hundred of "Land of Count Alan" and the county of Yorkshire and the population was estimated at 20 households. In 1870-72 John Wilson's '' Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales'' described Constable Burton as:"a township in Finghall parish, N. R. Yorkshire; adjacent to the Leyburn railway, 3¼ miles E of Leyburn. It includes the hamlet of Studdow. Acres, 2,572. Real property, £3,038. Pop., 224. Constable Burton Hall
Constable Burton Hall is a grade I-listed Georgian mansion of dressed stone in an extensive and well wooded park in the village of Constable Burton in North Yorkshire, and is privately owned by the Wyvill family. The house is a two-storey ashlar faced structure with a five bay frontage having an elegant recessed Ionic portico. The principal entrance is approached by a double flight of steps. The side elevation has a pediment and there is a large projecting bay to the rear of the house. History The estate came into the Wyvill family by marriage in the reign of Edward VI and a house was constructed in Elizabethan times to an H-shaped floor plan. In 1611 Marmaduke Wyvill was created a baronet. The house then passed down to the 7th Baronet, also Sir Marmaduke Wyvill, who in 1768 commissioned John Carr of York to renovate it in the Palladian style. John Carr (architect)
John Carr (1723–1807) was a prolific English architect, best known for Buxton Crescent in Derbyshire and Harewood House in West Yorkshire. Much of his work was in the Palladian style. In his day he was considered to be the leading architect in the north of England. Life He was born in Horbury, near Wakefield, England, the eldest of nine children and the son of a master mason, under whom he trained. He started an independent career in 1748 and continued until shortly before his death. John Carr was Lord Mayor of York in 1770 and 1785. Towards the end of his life Carr purchased an estate at Askham Richard, near York, to which he retired. On 22 February 1807 he died at Askham Hall. He was buried in St Peter and St Leonard's Church, Horbury, which he had designed and paid for. The 2015 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday, 7 May 2015 to elect 650 members to the House of Commons. Wensleydale Railway
The Wensleydale Railway is a heritage railway in Wensleydale and Lower Swaledale in North Yorkshire, England. It was built in stages by different railway companies and originally extended to railway station on the Settle-Carlisle line. Since 2003, the remaining line has been run as a heritage railway. The line runs between Northallerton West station, about a fifteen-minute walk from station on the East Coast Main Line, and . Regular passenger services operate between and , while occasional freight services and excursions travel the full length of the line. Constable Burton Railway Station
Constable Burton railway station is a disused railway station on the Wensleydale Railway, in North Yorkshire, England. It was built to serve Constable Burton Hall, the village and the farms in this rural area. History It was opened by the Bedale and Leyburn Railway on 19 May 1856, and served the village of Constable Burton. The station closed to passengers on 26 April 1954. The North Eastern Railway (United Kingdom), North Eastern Railway operated the Northallerton to Hawes and Garsdale railway station on the Settle & Carlisle line until the Midland Railway operated it prior to grouping in 1922 subsequently it was part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway until nationalisation in 1948. The station was closed to freight on 14 October 1957 but stone traffic continued using the line until 1992.
