Conrad Prebys Music Center
The Conrad Prebys Music Center (CPMC) is located on the campus of the University of California San Diego in La Jolla, California. The Music Center houses the university's music department, and is anchored by the 400-seat Concert Hall, in addition to the 170-seat Recital Hall and an Experimental Theatre with variable digital acoustics system. History From 1975 to 2009, the UC San Diego music department had been housed primarily in the Mandeville Center. But because the central Mandeville Auditorium had been designed as an all-purpose venue to accommodate a large variety of functions, the 800-seat hall was not ideally suited acoustically for music performance. Financing for a new Music Center was approved by the UC System in late 2006, and construction began in 2007. Roger Reynolds
Roger Lee Reynolds (born July 18, 1934) is a Pulitzer prize-winning American composer. He is known for his capacity to integrate diverse ideas and resources, and for the seamless blending of traditional musical sounds with those newly enabled by technology. Beyond composition, his contributions to musical life include mentorship, algorithmic design, engagement with psychoacoustics, writing books and articles, and festival organization. The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, also known as The Conrad, is a concert hall located in La Jolla, California. It was opened in April 2019 and serves as the permanent residence of the La Jolla Music Society. History Since 1986, the La Jolla Music Society (LJMS) rented the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego's Sherwood Auditorium throughout their concert seasons and well as their ''SummerFest''. In 2012, the LJMS learned of the museum's plans to demolish Sherwood Auditorium. In May 2014, the LJMS purchased a 30,760-square-foot parcel of land worth $10 million in La Jolla Village using $50 million in funds from eleven donors including $15 million from Conrad Prebys. Guggenheim Fellowships are grants that have been awarded annually since by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to those "who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts." Each year, the foundation issues awards in each of two separate competitions: * One open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada. * The other to citizens and permanent residents of Latin America and the Caribbean. The Pulitzer Prize () is an award for achievements in newspaper, magazine, online journalism, literature, and musical composition within the United States. It was established in 1917 by provisions in the will of Joseph Pulitzer, who had made his fortune as a newspaper publisher, and is administered by Columbia University. Prizes are awarded annually in twenty-one categories. In twenty of the categories, each winner receives a certificate and a US$15,000 cash award (raised from $10,000 in 2017).
