In the state governments of the United States, 48 of the 50 states have the executive position of treasurer. New York abolished the position in 1926; duties were transferred to New York State Comptroller. Texas abolished the position of Texas State Treasurer in 1996, transferring the duties of that office to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. The state treasurer serves as the chief custodian of each state's treasury and as the state's head banker. Typically, they receive and deposit state monies, manages investments, and keeps track of budget surpluses and deficits. Shawn Wooden (politician)
Shawn T. Wooden is an American attorney and politician who served as the state treasurer of Connecticut between January 2019 and January 2023. Wooden previously served as a member of the Hartford City Council. Early life and career Wooden attended Trinity College on a scholarship. He earned his Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law. After graduating from college and prior to attending law school, he worked for Hartford Mayor Carrie Saxon Perry. He also served as Connecticut State Director for Project VOTE and worked for the AFL-CIO's Office of Investment in Washington, D.C. Wooden was elected to the Hartford City Council in 2011. Denise Nappier
Denise Lynn Nappier (born June 16, 1951) is an American who served as Connecticut State Treasurer, from 1999 to 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, she was first elected in 1998 and was re-elected in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014. She is the first African-American woman elected to statewide office in the history of Connecticut, the first woman elected State Treasurer in Connecticut history, and the first African-American woman elected to serve as state treasurer in the United States. In 2011, she was named to the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame. In January 2018, Nappier announced she would not seek re-election to a sixth term in November 2018.
