Connecticut Ice
Connecticut Ice is an annual ice hockey event celebrating the tradition and progress of youth and amateur hockey in the state of Connecticut. The three-day event is headlined by a four-team tournament with participation from all of the state's four Division I programs: Connecticut, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Yale. History After years of organization, the first event was finally arranged for late January in 2020. In addition to the collegiate tournament, the three-day event includes youth tournaments from various levels of junior ice hockey. SportsNet New York agreed to broadcast all four games of the tournament. In 2021, in what was supposed to be the second edition of the tournament, the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among other problems, the virus had led Yale to cancel its entire season. College ice hockey is played principally in the United States and Canada, though leagues exist outside North America. In the United States, competitive "college hockey" refers to ice hockey played between colleges and universities within the governance structure established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The 2019-20 Quinnipiac Bobcats Men's ice hockey season was the 44th season of play for the program and the 15th season in the ECAC Hockey conference. 2023–24 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 2023–24 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season began on October 6, 2023, and is scheduled to conclude with the NCAA championship on April 13, 2024. This is the 76th season in which an NCAA ice hockey championship is being held, and is US college hockey's 130th year overall. Conference realignment After Robert Morris suspended its program in the summer of 2021, a successful fundraising campaign allowed the team to return for this season. The program rejoined Atlantic Hockey, bringing the number of conference members back up to 11. The same summer, Augustana University proceeded with plans to promote its athletic department to Division I. In concert with that decision, the school finalized the addition of a new ice hockey program that would begin with this season. 2022–23 Yale Bulldogs Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 2022–23 Yale Bulldogs Men's ice hockey season was the 127th season of play for the program and the 61st in the ECAC Hockey conference. The Bulldogs represented Yale University and were coached by Keith Allain, in his 16th season. Season After a very poor year, particularly on the offense, Yale was hoping that 2023 would be better. Unfortunately, from the very beginning, it was apparent that the Bulldogs could not score. After winning their season-opener, the team lost the next 8 games. In that stretch the Elis averaged lest than 1 goal per game and were shutout in 4 consecutive matches. The team saw marginal improvements after the winter break and went through a stretch of 5 games without a regulation loss. 2022–23 Sacred Heart Pioneers Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 2022–23 Sacred Heart Pioneers men's ice hockey season was the 30th season of play for the program, the 25th at the Division I level, and the 20th in the Atlantic Hockey conference. The Pioneers represented Sacred Heart University and were coached by C. J. Marottolo, in his 14th season. Season The biggest development for the program was the completion of the Martire Family Arena. While the new arena had significantly less seating capacity, the chief advantage was being the first on-campus home for the team. Not only would this allow greater access for the program but it would also be much easier for the student body to attend games. Because the opening for the rink wouldn't be until January 2023, the team had to play the first half of the season at the Total Mortgage Arena. The 2022–23 UConn Huskies men's ice hockey season was the 63rd season of play for the program, the 25th at the Division I level, and the 9th in Hockey East. The Huskies represented the University of Connecticut and were coached by Mike Cavanaugh, in his 10th season. Season After one of the best seasons in the history of the program, Mike Cavanaugh knew he would have a difficult time getting Connecticut to match the same level of success in 2023. With nearly half of the roster changing, UConn would need to replace not only its starting goaltender but three of its top four scorers as well. Conference realignment On August 31, 2021, Alaska Anchorage announced that the $3 million fundraising goal had been reached and the team would return for the 2022–23 season. On February 23, Lindenwood University announced that they would be promoting their athletic program to Division I for the 2022–23 academic year. Then on March 17, Lindenwood announced that they would promote their men's ice hockey team from club to Division I, which was confirmed the next day by university president John R. Porter. The 2021–22 Yale Bulldogs Men's ice hockey season was the 126th season of play for the program and the 60th season in the ECAC Hockey conference. The Bulldogs represented Yale University and were coached by Keith Allain, in his 15th season. Season After ending an unbroken string of 125 years of varsity hockey, Yale returned to the ice looking to put the COVID-19 pandemic in the past. Unfortunately, due in part to missing all of the past season, the Bulldogs were very slow out of the gate and were never really able to find their stride. Yale lost each of their first six games, however, more concerning was that the team went scoreless in four of those contests. Their offence did pick up a bit in early December but it didn't stay that way for long. Over the course of the season Yale's scoring was dreadful, averaging less than two goals a game. The 2021–22 Sacred Heart Pioneers men's ice hockey season was the 29th season of play for the program, the 24th at the Division I level, and the 19th season in the Atlantic Hockey conference. The Pioneers represented Sacred Heart University and were coached by C. J. Marottolo, in his 13th season. Season Sacred Heart spent the entire season hovering around the .500 mark. The team was effectively average in all aspects of the game; neither their offense nor defense were particularly strong, but both couldn't be called weaknesses either. Over the course of the season, Sacred Heart's longest losing streak was just three games but they weren't able to put together any long stretches of winning hockey. The Pioneers got mostly reliable goaltending from junior Justin Robbins but also buoyed his efforts with stints from both Josh Benson and Luke Lush. The 2021–22 UConn Huskies men's ice hockey season was the 62nd season of play for the program, the 24th at the Division I level, and the 8th season in the Hockey East conference.
