Connacht Intermediate Hurling Championship
The Connacht Intermediate Hurling Championship is an inter county competition between the Intermediate Hurling county teams in the province of Connacht in Ireland. The series of games are organised by the Connacht Council. The winners of the Connacht Intermediate Hurling Championship each year progress to play the other provincial champions for a chance to win the All-Ireland Intermediate Hurling Championship. The competition has not been played since 1999, and Galway has represented the province in the All-Ireland series. The other counties in the province are not strong enough to field a second hurling team for this competition. Connacht
Connacht ( ; ga, Connachta or ), is one of the provinces of Ireland, in the west of Ireland. Until the ninth century it consisted of several independent major Gaelic kingdoms (Uí Fiachrach, Uí Briúin, Uí Maine, Conmhaícne, and Delbhna). Connacht GAA (Irish: Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Chonnacht) or formally the Connacht Provincial Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association is the governing body for Gaelic games that are played in the province of Connacht, Ireland. The GAA Hurling Intermediate All-Ireland Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). Effectively contested by the second string teams of the top inter-county hurling sides in Ireland, the tournament has taken place every year since 1997—having originally been run between 1961 and 1973. The final, currently held in July, serves as the culmination of a series of games played during the early summer, and the results determine which team receives the Michael Cusack Cup. The Munster Hurling Intermediate Championship is an annual hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1961 for the strong hurling teams in the province of Munster in Ireland. In some cases the teams consist of players who are not on the senior squads for their county (thus in effect, they are a second team), or in others of players who are from junior or intermediate clubs. The competition was established to prevent the stronger counties from dominating the Munster Junior Hurling Championship. The Ulster Intermediate Hurling Championship is an inter county competition between the Intermediate Hurling county teams in the province of Ulster in Ireland. The series of games are organised by the Ulster Council. The winners of the Ulster Intermediate Hurling Championship each year progress to play the other provincial champions for a chance to win the All-Ireland Intermediate Hurling Championship. The competition has not been played since 1999. In 2000, Down and London took part in open draw portion of the All-Ireland Championship. Hurling is not strong enough in the province to keep the championship in existence. Only Antrim is capable of fielding a second team. In fact, prior to the establishment of this championship, Antrim competed in the Leinster Intermediate Hurling Championship from 1961 until 1965.
