Conjunto Quisqueya
Conjunto Quisqueya is a Merengue musical band from the Dominican Republic. Active since 1972, the band has released several albums and reached international fame. Beginnings The band was formed in the early 1970s by two University of Puerto Rico students, the Dominican Republic citizens Aneudy Diaz and Adib Melgen. They were later joined by Javich Victoria and Chuky Acosta, to form the foursome that would make the group famous. The group of friends created the band at first to meet women and be able to get (alcoholic) drinks, according to Melgen. The group debuted during 1972, at first appearing at the "Show de las 12" television show in Puerto Rico's canal 2. Merengue Music
Merengue is a type of music and dance originating in the Dominican Republic, which has become a very popular genre throughout Latin America, and also in several major cities in the United States with Latino communities. Merengue was inscribed on November 30, 2016 in the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO. Merengue was developed in the middle of the 1800s, originally played with European stringed instruments ( bandurria and guitar). Years later, the stringed instruments were replaced by the accordion, thus conforming, together with the güira and the tambora, the instrumental structure of the typical merengue ensemble. This set, with its three instruments, represents the synthesis of the three cultures that made up the idiosyncrasy of Dominican culture. Paquito Cordero
Paquito Cordero (October 16, 1932 – June 30, 2009), was a pioneer of Puerto Rican television. He was also a comedian and a musical and television producer. Early years Cordero (birth name: Francisco Cordero Baez) was born to Francisco Cordero Paco and Berta Baez de Cordero in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Cordero attended Santurce Central High School upon finishing his primary and secondary education. He was a member of his high school's drama club and participated in its plays, where he discovered the art of comedy. Cordero was geatly influenced by his aunt on his father's side, Mapy Cortés.
