Congress Of Canadian Women
The Congress of Canadian Women was a feminist organization created in March 1950 by the merger of several organizations, including the Housewives and Consumers Association. The Congress lobbied for women's equality including measures such as equal pay and public daycare. Rae Luckock was the organization's founding president. Former Labor-Progressive Party Member of Parliament Dorise Nielsen was also involved in founding the organization. Rae Luckock
Margaret Rae Morrison Luckock (October 15, 1893 – January 24, 1972) known as Rae Luckock was a feminist, social justice activist, peace activist and, with Agnes Macphail, one of the first two women elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, in 1943. A member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (Ontario Section), also known as the Ontario CCF, Luckock was elected to the Ontario legislature in the 1943 Ontario general election representing Toronto's Bracondale constituency ( riding). She served as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) until she was defeated in the 1945 Ontario general election. She became the Congress of Canadian Women's founding president in 1950, and became a victim of the Cold War's anti-communist hysteria when she was denied entry into the United States, because she travelled to "Red" China and invited Soviet women to visit Canada. The Labor-Progressive Party (french: Parti ouvrier-progressiste) was the legal Front organization, front of the Communist Party of Canada from 1943 to 1959. Dorise Winifred Nielsen (30 July 1902 – 9 December 1980) was a Canadians, Canadian communist politician, feminist and teacher. Biography Before politics Born in London, England, Doris Webber arrived in Canada and settled in Saskatchewan in 1927 to work as a teacher and married Peter Nielsen, a homesteader, the same year. Adding an 'e' to her given name on her marriage certificate, she became Dorise Nielsen. Political career She joined the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in 1934 and was a CCF campaign manager during the 1938 Saskatchewan general election, 1938 provincial election.
