''Confessing to Laura'' ( es, Confesión a Laura) is a 1991 Colombian drama film directed by Jaime Osorio Gómez. The film is set during El Bogotazo, a violent rioting that erupted in Bogotá after the assassination of presidential candidate Jorge Eliécer Gaitán on 9 April 1948. The story is about an oppressed husband forced by the circumstances to spend the day at his neighbor's home, a lonely, mature schoolteacher. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole.
