Confederate Memorial Gates In Mayfield
The Confederate Memorial Gates in Mayfield are historical monuments at the entrances to Maplewood Cemetery in Mayfield, Kentucky. The monuments were the second monument in Mayfield established by the United Daughters of the Confederacy; the first being the Confederate Memorial in Mayfield in downtown Mayfield. The gates were the third choice for monuments, chosen mostly due to their relatively low cost. The UDC intended them to not only be a monument to the residents of Graves County who served the Confederate States of America, but also a civic improvement. Description The monuments are three pairs of stuccoed poured concrete gateposts, six in total, each. When closed. the main pair's gates read "The United Daughters of the Confederacy Memorial". Mayfield, Kentucky
Mayfield is a home rule–class city and the county seat of Graves County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 10,017 as of the 2020 United States Census. History 19th century Mayfield is in the center of the Jackson Purchase, an eight-county region purchased by Isaac Shelby and Andrew Jackson from the Chickasaw people in 1818. Mayfield was established as the county seat of Graves County in 1821, and the county was formally organized in 1823. John Anderson is believed to have been the first white settler, arriving in 1819 and building a log home on Mayfield Creek. In December 1821, Anderson was appointed county court clerk and moved about two and a half miles to the site that became Mayfield. According to Trabue Davis, the town's name originates indirectly from a gambler named Mayfield, who was kidnapped about 1817 at a racetrack near what is now Hickman. Camp Beauregard Memorial In Water Valley
The Camp Beauregard Memorial, outside Water Valley, Kentucky on Kentucky state road 2422 northeast of town, marks the site of a Confederate States Army encampment named for General P. G. T. Beauregard. The camp was situated to protect the right flank of the Confederate encampment at Columbus, Kentucky. Background While an active military installation, from September 1861 to March 1, 1862, it trained 5,000-6,000 soldiers for the Confederacy. However, the place was disease-ridden, resulting in 1,000-1,500 deaths at the camp. The diseases included cerebrospinal meningitis, pneumonia, and typhoid fever with poor weather and lack of sufficient supplies for the troops contributing to the dire situation. The Confederate Memorial Gateway in Hickman, Kentucky is a historic cemetery gateway in Fulton County, Kentucky. The Wooldridge Monuments are a series of historical monuments located in Maplewood Cemetery of Mayfield, Kentucky. They were built for Colonel Henry G. United Daughters Of The Confederacy
The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) is an American neo-Confederate hereditary association for female descendants of Confederate Civil War soldiers engaging in the commemoration of these ancestors, the funding of monuments to them, and the promotion of the pseudohistorical Lost Cause ideology and corresponding white supremacy. Established in Nashville, Tennessee in 1894, the group venerated the Ku Klux Klan during the first half of the 20th century and funded the construction of a monument to the Klan in 1926. According to the Institute for Southern Studies, the UDC "elevated he Klanto a nearly mythical status. It dealt in and preserved Klan artifacts and symbology.
