Confederate Cemetery, San Antonio
The San Antonio Confederate Cemetery is a private cemetery in the city of San Antonio, Texas, which is now surrounded by the Old San Antonio City Cemeteries Historic District. There are more than 900 graves of Confederate veterans in the 2 acre (0.8 ha) cemetery, including those of colonels John S. Ford and George W. Baylor. The Confederate Cemetery Association - San Antonio, Texas are the caretakers of this cemetery, allowing access to all visitors and the decedents of those intured within its grounds, under Texas State cemetery laws. The CCA has maintained the grounds, roads, and gravesites of the cemetery since the City of San Antonio decided not to renew its contract for maintenance in 2019. Old San Antonio City Cemeteries Historic District
The Old San Antonio City Cemeteries Historic District, also known as the Eastside Cemetery Historic District, is a 103-acre complex collection of the oldest cemeteries in San Antonio, all established between 1853 and 1904. The individual cemeteries in the district were once part of land acreage that the City of San Antonio parceled off and sold to local churches and other organizations to be used as their private cemeteries. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. The cemeteries are notable for their layout and size, their diversity of design (from simple to formal), their funerary monuments (from works of accomplished sculptors to folk design), and for the array of community leaders interred there. George Wythe Baylor
George Wythe Baylor (August 24, 1832 – March 24, 1916) was a Confederate States of America, Confederate Cavalry in the American Civil War, cavalry Officer (armed forces), officer from Texas, and a veteran of many battles of the American Civil War. He was also a noted lawman and frontiersman with the Texas Ranger Division, Texas Rangers. Born at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, Fort Gibson, Indian Territory, in 1832, Baylor came to Republic of Texas, Texas at the end of 1845 as a boy and was educated there. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate States Army, and was elected first lieutenant, 2nd Texas Mounted Rifles. San Antonio National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery in the city of San Antonio in Bexar County, Texas. Administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, it encompasses , and as of the end of 2005, had 3,163 interments. The Historical Marker Database (HMdb.org) is an online database that documents locations of numerous historical markers in the United States as well as other countries. The database was launched in 2006 by computer programmer J. J. Prats. The HMdb served as the basis for the database for the online augmented reality game Ingress, which was then later repurposed for Pokémon Go. The HMdb was launched in 2006 with 179 markers that Prats had personally documented. By 2015 the site listed more than 74,000 markers.
