''Compsodrillia gundlachi'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Pseudomelatomidae, the turrids and allies. The specific epithet is named after Cuban naturalist Juan Gundlach. Description The length of the shell attains 50 mm. The original description is as follows: "The solid, slender shell is pale brown or whitish. It contains ten whorls (the nepionic whorls lost) strongly appressed at the suture; anal fascicle close to the suture,. The whorls are smooth or faintly spirally striated, rather wide and excavated. The notch is wide, not very deep. The sculpture consists of about six strong, short, turgid ribs obsolete in front of the periphery and on the last half of the body whorl. These are crossed by from two to five spiral threads stronger on the summits of the ribs, especially the pair which first appear, and faint, finer, spiral striations between the ribs. William Healey Dall
William Healey Dall (August 21, 1845 – March 27, 1927) was an American naturalist, a prominent malacologist, and one of the earliest scientific explorers of interior Alaska. He described many mollusks of the Pacific Northwest of America, and was for many years America's preeminent authority on living and fossil mollusks. Dall also made substantial contributions to ornithology, zoology, physical and cultural anthropology, oceanography and paleontology. In addition he carried out meteorological observations in Alaska for the Smithsonian Institution. Biography Early life Dall was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Some sea marine gastropods have a soft tubular anterior extension of the mantle called a siphon through which water is drawn into the mantle cavity and over the gill and which serves as a chemoreceptor to locate food. A whorl is a single, complete 360° revolution or turn in the spiral growth of a mollusc shell. Charles Torrey Simpson
Charles Torrey Simpson (June 3, 1846 in Tiskilwa, Illinois – December 17, 1932 in Lemon City, Miami, Florida) was an American botanist, malacologist, and conservationist. He retired to Florida where he became known for conservation. Scientific work His initial scientific interesting concerned collecting shells and he began as a conchologist. Although he had little more than a high school education he became well regarded in the field and in 1889 was hired by the Smithsonian Institution. He went on to work at the National Museum of Natural History from 1899 to 1902. He was interested mainly in freshwater bivalves and also in land snails of Florida. Juan Cristóbal Gundlach (17 July 1810 in Marburg – 14 March 1896 in Havana), born Johannes Christoph Gundlach was a Cuban naturalist and taxonomist. Biography Gundlach graduated from Marburg University, where his father was professor of physics, as Doctor of Philosophy in 1837. In 1839, he left Europe to make collections on the Caribbean island of Cuba, where he lived ever since. During a short trip to Puerto Rico, at the request of Jesuit fathers to offer assistance in the creation of a zoological collection, in 1868, when revolutionary activities were beginning in Cuba as well as Puerto Rico, he met with don Tomás Blanco, according to naturalist Dr. Agustín Stahl.
