''Compromising Positions'' is a 1985 American film released by Paramount Pictures and directed by Frank Perry. The screenplay, by Susan Isaacs, was adapted from her 1978 novel. The plot concerns a Long Island housewife and former journalist who becomes involved in a murder investigation. The film stars Susan Sarandon, Raúl Juliá, Judith Ivey, Edward Herrmann, Mary Beth Hurt, Joe Mantegna, Deborah Rush, Anne De Salvo, and Josh Mostel. Joan Allen has a small role. Plot Judith Singer is a former ''Newsday'' reporter who misses her old life, now that her husband Bob spends most of his time at work and her time at home on Long Island has become a bore. Frank Perry
Frank Joseph Perry Jr. (August 21, 1930 – August 29, 1995) was an American stage director and filmmaker. His 1962 independent film '' David and Lisa'' earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay (written by his then-wife Eleanor Perry). The couple collaborated on five more films, including '' The Swimmer'', ''Diary of a Mad Housewife'', and the Emmy Award–nominated ''A Christmas Memory'', based on a short story by Truman Capote. Perry went on to form Corsair Pictures, privately financed by United Artists Theatres, which produced ''Miss Firecracker'' and '' A Shock to the System'', then folded. His later films include ''Mommie Dearest'' and the documentary ''On the Bridge'', about his battle with prostate cancer. Instant film is a type of photographic film that was introduced by Polaroid Corporation to produce a visible image within minutes or seconds of the photograph's exposure. The film contains the chemicals needed for developing and fixing the photograph, and the camera exposes and initiates the developing process after a photo has been taken.
