Henri Verneuil
Henri Verneuil (; born Ashot Malakian; 15 October 1920 – 11 January 2002) was a French-Armenian playwright and filmmaker, who made a successful career in France. He was nominated for Oscar and Palme d'Or awards, and won Locarno International Film Festival, Edgar Allan Poe Awards, French Legion of Honor, Golden Globe Award, French National Academy of Cinema and Honorary Cesar awards. According to one obituary: For exactly 40 years, the prolific Verneuil made movies as mainstream and commercial as any to be found in America or Britain. In his best period – the 1950s and 1960s – he delivered films in the "tradition of quality" so despised by the Nouvelle Vague. Many of them proved excellent vehicles for old-timers Jean Gabin and Fernandel, and newcomers such as Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon. Life and career Early life Verneuil was born Ashot Malakian ( hy, Աշոտ Մալաքեան) to Armenian parents in Rodosto, East Thrace, Turkey. In 1924, when Ashot was a little ch ... The song has been adapted in several languages. History In July 1947, Henri Betti was in Nice and on his way to join his father in the center of town to play a game of bridge. Passing under the arcades of the he stopped in front of the window of a lingerie shop and it was there that the first nine musical notes of the song came into his head: F, E, E, F, G, A, G, F, D. He wrote the notes on a sheet of music paper so that he would remember them. Once back home at 52 , he composed the melody in less than ten minutes. He then went up to Paris and made an appointment with the lyricist André Hornez at the Hôtel Grand Powers at 52 to find a title for his song. What Can I Do? (Edith Piaf Song)
"What Can I Do?" ("Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai?") is a French popular song composed in 1947 by Henri Betti with the lyrics by Édith Piaf. The English lyrics were written in 1949 by Harold Rome. Story In 1947, Édith Piaf and Yves Montand had just quit amicably and Édith Piaf had written the lyrics of a song in memory of their love story whose departure was "Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai à tant l'aimer que ça me donne envie de crier!". She asked Henri Betti to put the music on his lyrics inspired by the style of Yves Montand. When they finished writing the song, Henri Betti left to propose it to Yves Montand and he also proposed to him "C'est si bon" that he had written with the lyrics of André Hornez at the same time "Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai?" and registered at the SACEM the same day (18 August 1947). Cherry Pink (and Apple Blossom White)
"Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" or "Cerezo Rosa" or "Ciliegi Rosa" or "Gummy Mambo", is the English version of "Cerisiers Roses et Pommiers Blancs", a popular song with music by Louiguy written in 1950. French lyrics to the song by Jacques Larue and English lyrics by Mack David both exist, and recordings of both have been quite popular. However, Pérez Prado's recording of the song as an instrumental with his orchestra featuring trumpeter Billy Regis, whose trumpet sound would slide down and up before the melody would resume, was the most popular version in 1955, reaching number one for 10 weeks on the ''Billboard'' chart. It became a gold record. Pérez had first recorded this title for the movie ''Underwater!'' (1955), where Jane Russell can be seen dancing to the song. Prado recorded ''Cherry Pink'' several times, the best known version being the original hit recording from 1955 and the 1960 recording in stereo. ''Billboard'' ranked the former version as the No. 1 son ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Jacques Larue
Ancient and noble French family names, Jacques, Jacq, or James are believed to originate from the Middle Ages in the historic northwest Brittany region in France, and have since spread around the world over the centuries. To date, there are over one hundred identified noble families related to the surname by the Nobility & Gentry of Great Britain & Ireland. Origins The origin of this surname ultimately originates from the Latin, Jacobus which belongs to an unknown progenitor. Jacobus comes from the Hebrew name, Yaakov, which translates as "one who follows" or "to follow after". Ancient history A French knight returning from the Crusades in the Holy Lands probably adopted the surname from "Saint Jacques" (or "James the Greater"). James the Greater was one of Jesus' Twelve Apostles, and is believed to be the first martyred apostle. Being endowed with this surname was an honor at the time and it is likely that the Church allowed it because of acts during the Crusades. Indeed, ...
