The Competition Bureau (french: Bureau de la concurrence) is the competition regulator in Canada. It is an independent Canadian law enforcement agency that ensures that markets operate in a competitive, innovative manner. Headed by the Commissioner of Competition, the Competition Bureau is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the '' Competition Act.'' Commissioner The current commissioner of competition is Matthew Boswell. He served as senior deputy commissioner of competition before being appointed to his current position. François-Philippe Champagne
François-Philippe Champagne (born June 25, 1970) is a Canadian politician who has been Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry since 2021. Champagne was formerly the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2019 to 2021. He was elected to represent the riding of Saint-Maurice—Champlain in the House of Commons in the 2015 election for the Liberal Party. He became Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry on January 12, 2021, after a cabinet reshuffle. Early life Champagne was raised in Shawinigan, Quebec, and studied law at the Université de Montréal and Case Western Reserve University School of Law. A competition regulator is the institution that oversees the functioning of the markets. And the Law in which it takes cognizance of situations having any type of impediments and distortions on the markets and correct them is the competition law (also known as antitrust law). In general it is a government agency, typically a statutory authority, sometimes called an economic regulator, that regulates and enforces competition laws and may sometimes also enforce consumer protection laws. The ''Competition Act'' is a Canadian federal law governing competition law in Canada. The Act contains both Criminal law of Canada, criminal and Civil law (common law), civil provisions aimed at preventing anti-competitive practices in the economy of Canada, marketplace. The Act is enforced and administered by the Competition Bureau, and cases are adjudicated by the Competition Tribunal. The Competition Tribunal is a federal adjudicative body in Canada that makes findings in regard to competition laws under the Competition Act. Restrictive Trade Practices Commission The tribunal was first known under its former name, the Restrictive Trade Practices Commission. The Commission was empowered to investigate suspected offenses under the ''Combines Investigation Act'', the precursor to the modern ''Competition Act''. Competition Tribunal In 1986, the Government of Canada introduced simultaneously the ''Competition Act'' and the ''Competition Tribunal Act''. The Act dissolved the Restrictive Trade Practices Commission and created the Competition Tribunal and the Competition Bureau. The International Competition Network (ICN) is an informal, virtual network that seeks to facilitate cooperation between competition law authorities globally. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (formerly known as PhoneBusters National Call Centre) is Canada's national anti-fraud call centre and central fraud data repository.
