Issuers have also taken the form of occupation forces; revolutionary regimes; agencies representing foreign post offices; international organisations; postal agencies appointed by individual cities, states (in the federal sense), territories, provinces or colonies; and even groups of countries with common issues under a combined postal administration. The drachma ( el, δραχμή , ; pl. ''drachmae'' or ''drachmas'') was the currency used in Greece during several periods in its history: # An ancient Greek currency unit issued by many Greek city states during a period of ten centuries, from the Archaic period throughout the Classical period, the Hellenistic period up to the Roman period under Greek Imperial Coinage. # Three modern Greek currencies, the first introduced in 1832 by the Greek King Otto () and the last replaced by the euro in 2001 (at the rate of 340.75 drachmae to the euro). The euro did not begin circulating until 2001 but the exchange rate was fixed on 19 June 2000, with legal introduction of the euro taking place in January 2002. It was also a small unit of weight.. Ancient drachma The name ''drachma'' is derived from the verb (, "(I) grasp"). It is believed that the same word with the meaning of "handful" or "handle" is found in Linear B tablets of the Mycenean Pylos. Initially a drachma was a ...

Greek Lepton
The ''lepton'', plural ''lepta'' ( el, λεπτόν, ), is the name of various fractional units of currency used in the Greek-speaking world from antiquity until today. The word means "small" or "thin", and during Classical and Hellenistic times a ''lepton'' was always a small value coin, usually the smallest available denomination of another currency. The coin in the lesson of the widow's mite (, ) is referred to as a ''lepton'' and Luke's Gospel also refers to the lepton or mite when stating that a person who does not make peace with his adversary in good time will be required to pay 'to the very last mite' before being released from prison. In the Hasmonean Kingdom the lepton was first minted under Alexander Jannaeus prior to 76 BCE.''Coins of the Bible'' Set 2 of 3, Whitman Publishing, LLC, 2004. In modern Greece, ''lepton'' (modern form: ''lepto'', λεπτό) is the name of the denomination of all the official currencies of the Greek state: the phoenix (1827–1832), ...

Piastre
The piastre or piaster () is any of a number of units of currency. The term originates from the Italian for "thin metal plate". The name was applied to Spanish and Hispanic American pieces of eight, or pesos, by Venice, Venetian traders in the Levant in the 16th century. These pesos, minted continually for centuries, were readily accepted by traders in many parts of the world. After the countries of Latin America had gained independence, pesos of Mexico began flowing in through the trade routes, and became prolific in the Far East, taking the place of the Spanish pieces of eight which had been introduced by the Spanish at Manila, and by the Portuguese people, Portuguese at Malacca. When the French French Indochina, colonised Indochina, they began issuing the new French Indochinese piastre (''piastre de commerce''), which was equal in value to the familiar Spanish and Mexican pesos. In the Ottoman Empire, the word piastre was a colloquial European name of Kuruş. Successive curr ...

Para (currency)
The ''para'' ( Turkish , plural: pare . From Persian , 'piece'; Cyrillic: пара) was a former currency of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey, Egypt, Montenegro, Albania and Yugoslavia and is the current subunit, although rarely used, of the Serbian dinar. In 1524, the Ottoman law code of Egypt (kanunname) referred to the Mamluk Egyptian coin ''medin'' as ''pare'' and set its value as 2.5 dirham. Since 1640 the value of para was settled relative to Ottoman currency, at 3 ''akçe.'' In the 16th and 17th centuries ''pare'' were minted in many parts of the empire, in Asia and north Africa. In 1688 the Ottoman ''kuruş'' was introduced, para equaling of a ''kuruş''. In 1844, a ''kuruş'' was, in turn, of the newly introduced Ottoman Lira. The modern Turkish lira is only divided into . In Serbia, the has been the subunit of the dinar since the 19th century. The Montenegrin perper was subdivided into 100 during its brief existence between 1906 and 1918. Finnish Markka
The markka ( fi, markka; sv, mark; sign: Mk; ISO code: FIM, typically known outside Finland as the Finnish mark) was the currency of Finland from 1860 until 28 February 2002, when it ceased to be legal tender. The mark was divided into 100 pennies ( fi, penni; sv, penni), abbreviated as "p". At the point of conversion, the rate was fixed at €1 = Mk 5.94573. The mark was replaced by the euro (€), which had been introduced, in cash form, on 1 January 2002. This was after a transitional period of three years, when the euro was the official currency but only existed as "book money" outside of the monetary base. The dual circulation period, when both the Finnish mark and the euro had legal tender status, ended on 28 February 2002. Etymology The name "markka" was based on a medieval unit of weight. Both "markka" and "penni" are similar to words used in Germany for that country's former currency, based on the same etymological roots as the Deutsche Mark and pfennig. ...
