Como Park is a neighborhood and city planning district in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in the United States. It is Planning District 10. The main features of the neighborhood are Como Lake and Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. The approximate boundaries of the neighborhood are Snelling Avenue to the west, Larpenteur Avenue to the north, Dale Street to the east, and the Pierce Butler Route to the south. History The area around Como Lake was originally swamp and oak savannas. It was inhabited seasonally by the Dakota people, who called the lake ''Medawaka'', which roughly translates to "Lake Mysterious." One of the earliest European settlers was Charles Perry. Como Lake (Minnesota)
Como Lake is a lake up to deep in St. Paul, Minnesota, United States. It, along with the neighboring Como Park, has been a recreation area for residents of the Twin Cities for more than a century. It was named in 1848 by local farmer Charles Perry. A pavilion sits on the west side of the lake, and plays host to theatrical performances and concerts during the warmer months. The park features a variety of attractions, including the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory and the Como Regional Park Pool. Environmental history Como Lake was originally mostly a wetland with some open water but was expanded and deepened when the surrounding Como Park was developed. The lake is fed by storm sewer water run off. In the summer algae blooms were frequent and visitors complained about the smell of the lake. The Como Park Zoo and Marjorie McNeely Conservatory (or just Como Zoo and Conservatory) are located in Como Park at 1225 Estabrook Drive, Saint Paul, Minnesota. The park, zoo and conservatory are owned by the City of Saint Paul and are a division of Saint Paul Parks and Recreation. Neighborhoods In Saint Paul, Minnesota
Saint Paul, Minnesota, consists of 17 officially defined city districts or neighborhoods. In its history, the city has been called "fifteen small towns with one mayor", owing to the neighborhood-based life of much of the city, though the city is partially governed by not 15 but 17 City Districts. On Saint Paul's largely blue-collar East Side alone there are more than two dozen well-known, historically significant neighborhoods within four City Districts. District 4, for example, has three historic neighborhoods: Dayton's Bluff, Swede Hollow, and Mounds Park. The most populous districts, 2 and 5, have more than a dozen neighborhoods between them.
