Common Purpose UK
Common Purpose is a British-founded charity that runs leadership-development programmes around the world. Common Purpose UK is a subsidiary of Common Purpose. Founded in 1989 by Julia Middleton, its aim is to develop leaders who cross boundaries so they can solve complex problems in work and in society. Adirupa Sengupta was appointed as Group CEO in 2019. As of 2015 Common Purpose ran local programmes for leaders in cities across the world, and its global programmes bring together leaders from over 100 countries across six continents. As of 2019, 85,000 leaders worldwide have taken part in Common Purpose programmes. Julia Middleton
Julia Mary Middleton (' Morland; 21 April 1958) is the founder oWomen Emergingin the UK. She is also the founder and former chief executive officer of Common Purpose, an international charity that runs leadership development programmes. She is a campaigner for the progression of diverse leaders in civil society. Early life and education Born in Lambeth, London, Middleton is the daughter of Agnes () and Eric Morland. Middleton was educated at the lycée Français in France and New York before earning an Economics degree from the London School of Economics. Michael White (journalist)
Michael White (born 21 October 1945) is a British journalist who was until 2016 an associate editor of ''The Guardian''. He is the paper's former political editor. Early and personal life White was raised in Wadebridge, Cornwall. He was educated at Bodmin Grammar School and then studied for a BA in history at University College London. His son is the political adviser Sam White. Career White began his career in journalism at the ''Reading Evening Post'' (1966–71) and after a spell at London's ''Evening Standard'' (1970–71) he moved to ''The Guardian'', where he worked as a sub/feature writer (1971–74), diary writer (1974–76), political correspondent and sketchwriter (1976–84) and Washington correspondent from 1984. Peter Wilby
Peter John Wilby (born 7 November 1944) is a British journalist. He is a former editor of ''The Independent on Sunday'' and the ''New Statesman''. Early life and career Wilby was educated at Kibworth Beauchamp grammar school in Leicestershire before gaining a place at Sussex University. While at Sussex, from where he graduated with a degree in history, he helped found a short-lived university paper called ''Sussex Outlook''. In 1968, he began his career as a reporter on ''The Observer'', becoming Education Correspondent four years later. In the same role, he worked for the ''New Statesman'' (1975–77), and for ''The Sunday Times'' (1977–86). Wilby joined ''The Independent on Sunday'' in 1990 and eventually became its editor (1995–96). New Statesman
The ''New Statesman'' is a British political and cultural magazine published in London. Founded as a weekly review of politics and literature on 12 April 1913, it was at first connected with Sidney and Beatrice Webb and other leading members of the socialist Fabian Society, such as George Bernard Shaw, who was a founding director. Today, the magazine is a print–digital hybrid. According to its present self-description, it has a liberal and progressive political position. Roy Greenslade
Roy Greenslade (born 31 December 1946) is a British author and freelance journalist, and a former professor of journalism. He worked in the UK newspaper industry from the 1960s onwards. As a media commentator, he wrote a daily blog from 2006 to 2018 for ''The Guardian'' and a column for London's ''Evening Standard'' from 2006 to 2016. Under a pseudonym, Greenslade also wrote for the Sinn Féin newspaper ''An Phoblacht'' during the late 1980s whilst also working on Fleet Street. In 2021, it was reported in ''The Times'' newspaper, citing an article by Greenslade in the '' British Journalism Review'', that he supported the bombing campaign of the Provisional IRA. The Guardian
''The Guardian'' is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in 1821 as ''The Manchester Guardian'', and changed its name in 1959. Along with its sister papers ''The Observer'' and ''The Guardian Weekly'', ''The Guardian'' is part of the Guardian Media Group, owned by the Scott Trust. The trust was created in 1936 to "secure the financial and editorial independence of ''The Guardian'' in perpetuity and to safeguard the journalistic freedom and liberal values of ''The Guardian'' free from commercial or political interference". Fabian Society
The Fabian Society is a British socialist organisation whose purpose is to advance the principles of social democracy and democratic socialism via gradualist and reformist effort in democracies, rather than by revolutionary overthrow. The Fabian Society was also historically related to radicalism, a left-wing liberal tradition. As one of the founding organisations of the Labour Representation Committee in 1900, and as an important influence upon the Labour Party which grew from it, the Fabian Society has had a powerful influence on British politics. Members of the Fabian Society have included political leaders from other countries, such as Jawaharlal Nehru, who adopted Fabian principles as part of their own political ideologies. Rotherham Child Sexual Exploitation Scandal
The Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal consisted of the organised child sexual abuse that occurred in the town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, Northern England from the late 1980s until the 2010s and the failure of local authorities to act on reports of the abuse throughout most of that period. Researcher Angie Heal, who was hired by local officials and warned them about child exploitation occurring between 2002 and 2007, has since described it as the "biggest child protection scandal in UK history".
