''Committed'' was an American comic strip written and drawn by Michael Fry. It ran from 1994 to 2006 and was syndicated by United Feature Syndicate. It was also adapted into an animated television series in 2001, but produced by the Canada-based Nelvana. Synopsis The strip was a family-oriented strip, centering on a suburban family consisted of two young children and their parents alongside their dog. History ''Committed'' was first published in 1994, and was drawn and written by former ''Houston Post'' editorial cartoonist Michael Fry. The strip centered on a family consisted of Liz and Joe Larsen, daughters Tracy and Zelda, and their dog, Bob. It took a single-panel format in dailies, and a typical multi-panel format on Sundays. Michael Fry
Michael Fry is an American cartoonist, online media entrepreneur, and screenwriter. He is best known for the syndicated comic strips ''Committed (comic strip), Committed'' and ''Over the Hedge'', the latter of which is a collaboration with T. Lewis. ''Over the Hedge'' was nominated for best newspaper strip by the National Cartoonists Society in 2006. Fry was also President of RingTales, an online media company. RingTales's Animated New Yorker Cartoons were nominated for a Webby Award in 2008. Fry started cartooning professionally at ''The Houston Post'' with the local daily comic strip, ''Scotty''. His work has appeared in ''Playboy'', ''Good Housekeeping'', ''The Texas Observer'', and many other publications. Fry is the author and illustrator of the middle-grade illustrated novel series "The Odd Squad" for Disney-Hyperion. United Feature Syndicate (UFS) is a large American editorial column and comic strip newspaper syndication service based in the United States and established in 1919. Originally part of E. W. Scripps Company, it was part of United Media (along with the Newspaper Enterprise Association) from 1978 to 2011, and is now a division of Andrews McMeel Syndication. Comic Strip
A comic strip is a sequence of drawings, often cartoons, arranged in interrelated panels to display brief humor or form a narrative, often serialized, with text in balloons and captions. Traditionally, throughout the 20th and into the 21st century, these have been published in newspapers and magazines, with daily horizontal strips printed in black-and-white in newspapers, while Sunday papers offered longer sequences in special color comics sections. With the advent of the internet, online comic strips began to appear as webcomics. Strips are written and drawn by a comics artist, known as a cartoonist. Nelvana Enterprises, Inc. (; previously known as Nelvana Limited, sometimes known as Nelvana Animation and simply Nelvana or Nelvana Communications) is a Canadian animation studio and entertainment company owned by Corus Entertainment. The ''Houston Post'' was a newspaper that had its headquarters in Houston, Texas, United States. In 1995, the newspaper shut down, and its assets were purchased by the ''Houston Chronicle''. History Gail Borden Johnson founded the ''Houston Post'' on February 19, 1880. He expanded the paper by acquiring the Houston ''Telegraph'', the legacy of the ''Telegraph and Texas Register'', which operated the first press in Texas after the Texas Revolution. By 1884, however, the paper was financially distressed, when William R. Baker led a group of investors to bailout the publication. Despite their efforts, the original publication ceased in October 1884. ''Over the Hedge'' is an American syndicated comic strip, written by Michael Fry, and drawn by T. Lewis. It tells the story of a raccoon, a turtle, a squirrel, and their friends, who come to terms with their woodlands being taken over, by suburbia, trying to survive the increasing flow of humanity and technology while becoming enticed by it at the same time. The strip debuted June 12, 1995. History Cartoonists Michael Fry and T. Lewis began collaborating through an agent who represented both of them. At the time, Lewis was a children’s book illustrator, and Fry was a freelance writer.
