Commemorative Coins Of Malta
Since introducing its own currency in 1972 Malta has issued a number of commemorative coins. The Jean De La Valette commemorative coins issued in 2007 were the last commemorative coins to be denominated in the Maltese lira as Malta joined the eurozone on 1 January 2008. Maltese Lira
The lira ( mt, lira Maltija, plural: ''liri'', ISO 4217 code: ''MTL'') or pound (until ca. 1986 in English, code ) was the currency of Malta from 1972 until 31 December 2007. One lira was divided into 100 cents, each of 10 mils. After 1986 the lira was abbreviated as Lm, although the original sign continued to be used unofficially. In English the currency was still frequently called the '' pound'' even after its official English language name was changed to ''lira''. The euro replaced the lira as the official currency of Malta on 1 January 2008 at the irrevocable fixed exchange rate of €1 per Lm 0.4293. Cottonera
The Three Cities ( mt, It-Tlett Ibliet) is a collective description of the three fortified cities of Birgu, Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua in Malta. The oldest of the Three Cities is Vittoriosa, which has existed since prior to the Middle Ages. The other two cities, Senglea and Cospicua, were both founded by the Knights Hospitaller, Order of Saint John in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Three Cities are enclosed by the Cottonera Lines, along with several other fortifications. The term Cottonera is synonymous with the Three Cities, although it is sometimes taken to also include the nearby town of Kalkara. Les Gavroches
''Les Gavroches'' is a bronze sculpture by Antonio Sciortino, depicting Parisian street children inspired by Gavroche from the 1862 Victor Hugo novel ''Les Misérables''. The statue was cast in 1904, and for most of the 20th century it was displayed at the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta, Malta. In 2000, the statue was restored and transferred to the National Museum of Fine Arts (now MUÅ»A) in the same city, and a replica was placed at the Upper Barrakka. History Sciortino completed ''Les Gavroches'' in 1904 while he was living in Rome. By the following year, the sculpture had been exhibited in Rome and Paris. Żurrieq
Å»urrieq ( mt, Iż-Å»urrieq ) is a town in the Southern Region of Malta. It is one of the oldest towns in the country, and it has a population of 11,823 inhabitants as of March 2014. The first documentation about it being a parish dates back to 1436 dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. The island of Filfla is administratively a part of the town. The town stretches from in Nigret to Ħal Far respectively in old times the town was a border with Å»ejtun. There are a number of villages forming part of Å»urrieq. The Xarolla Windmill at Å»urrieq, Malta is one of the windmills constructed by the Order of St. John in the villages and towns of Malta. It was built in the 18th-century and is presently one of the most preserved windmills in Malta. Luigi Preziosi
Count Sir Luigi Preziosi (29 July 1888 – 30 July 1965) was a Maltese politician and a doctor who specialized in ophthalmology. He was mostly known for devising an original operation for the treatment of glaucoma in 1924, which remained in use for many decades. Biography He was born in Sliema, Malta on 29 July 1888, the second son of the seventh Count Preziosi of Malta. He graduated in the Royal University of Malta in 1907. During the First World War, Luigi Preziosi was a medical officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He then married the Noble Lugarda Chapelle dei Baroni di San Giovanni on 29 April 1920, with whom he had three children. The same year he specialised in ophthalmology in Oxford. Following the death of his father, Luigi inherited the hereditary noble title of Count and became the 8th Count of Preziosi. Kelb Tal-Fenek
The Pharaoh Hound or is a Maltese breed of hunting dog. It is traditionally used for rabbit-hunting in the rocky terrain of the islands; the Maltese name means "rabbit dog". It is classified by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in its "Spitz and primitive" group, and shows similarities to other Mediterranean breeds in that group such as the Cirneco dell'Etna, the Podenco Andaluz, the Podenco Canario, the Podenco Ibicenco and the Portuguese Podengo. Fort Manoel
Fort Manoel ( mt, Forti Manoel or ''Fortizza Manoel'') is a star fort on Manoel Island in Gżira, Malta. It was built in the 18th century by the Order of Saint John, during the reign of Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena, after whom it is named. Fort Manoel is located to the north west of Valletta, and commands Marsamxett Harbour and the anchorage of Sliema Creek. The fort is an example of Baroque architecture, and it was designed with both functionality and aesthetics in mind. After a brief French occupation which began in 1798, the British military took over the fort in 1800, and it remained in use by them until 1964. The fort was severely damaged in World War II, but it was restored in the early 21st century and it is now in good condition. Ä użè Ellul Mercer (22 March 1897 – 22 September 1961) was a Maltese author, journalist and politician. He joined the Labour Party (PL) and he started his parliamentary career in 1924. He was subsequently elected Member of Parliament at the general elections held in 1951 and 1955. In 1955, he was elected Labour Party deputy-leader for parliamentary affairs. He was also appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Public Works and Reconstruction in 1955, but lost that position after the 1958 election. Early life and career Ellul Mercer was born in Msida in 1897, to Salvu Ellul and Jane née Mercer. He was the eldest amongst twelve siblings.
