Commander Of The Armed Forces (Suriname)
The Commander of the Armed Forces ( nl, Commandant van de strijdkrachten) is the professional head of the National Army ( nl, Nationaal Leger—NL, link=no), the military of the Republic of Suriname. The position dates back to the country's independence from the Netherlands in 1975, with the military being named the Surinamese Armed Forces ( nl, Surinaamse Krijgsmacht—SKM, link=no) until after the Sergeants' Coup in 1980. The Commander of the Armed Forces is appointed by the President of Suriname, who is the commander-in-chief according to the Constitution. The current Commander of the Armed Forces is Colonel Werner Kioe A Sen, serving since 27 October 2022. Coat Of Arms Of Suriname
The coat of arms of Suriname was adopted on November 25, 1975. The motto reads ''Justitia – Pietas – Fides'' (“Justice – Piety – Fidelity”). It consists of two indigenous men carrying a shield; a trade ship on the water representing Suriname's colonial past as a source of cash crops and its present day involvement in international commerce; the royal palm represents both the rainforest that covers two-thirds of the country and the country's involvement in agribusiness; the diamond represents the mining industry; the star symbolizes the five continents from which the inhabitants of Suriname immigrated. ''De Ware Tijd'' (English: The True Time) is one of four daily newspapers in Paramaribo, Suriname. , it was the largest-circulation paper in the country, ahead of its rival, ''De West'', and was described as taking a "staunchly independent stance" politically. ''Trouw'' (; ) is a Dutch daily newspaper appearing in compact size. It was founded in 1943 as an orthodox Protestant underground newspaper during World War II. Since 2009, it has been owned by DPG Media (known as De Persgroep until 2019). ''Trouw'' received the European Newspaper Award in 2012. Cees van der Laan is the current editor-in-chief. The 1990 Surinamese coup d'état, usually referred to as the Telephone Coup (), was a military coup in Suriname on 24 December 1990. The coup was carried out by the acting commander-in-chief of the Suriname National Army (SNL), Police Chief Ivan Graanoogst. As a result of the coup, President Ramsewak Shankar was dismissed from power, and parliament and government were disbanded. Ivan Graanoogst
Ivan Graanoogst is a Surinamese soldier and politician. He was the acting military ruler of Suriname from 24 December 1990 to 29 December 1990, after a military coup overthrew the democratic government of President Ramsewak Shankar. Biography Graanoogst was a lieutenant in Suriname, when the country was under the power of the military regime. At the end of 1980, he succeeded Badrissein Sital as chairman of the National Military Council. In 1982, he became Minister of Culture, Youth, Sport and Information and then Minister of Army and Police. On December 22, 1990, Dési Bouterse resigned as commander of the army, because of the growing disagreement between him and President Ramsewak Shankar. Desiré Delano "Dési" Bouterse (; born 13 October 1945) is a Surinamese military officer, politician, convicted murderer and drug trafficker who served as President of Suriname from 2010 to 2020.
