Pioneer Mountains (Montana)
The Pioneer Mountains cover in Beaverhead County in southwestern Montana, USA. The highest peaks in this range include: * Tweedy Mountain () * Torrey Mountain () * Baldy Mountain () * Mount Fleecer () * Odell Mountain () The Pioneer Mountains are divided into two subranges by the paved Wise River Road: the East Pioneers and West Pioneers. The highest mountains in the entire range are in the East Pioneers - Tweedy Mountain and nearby Torrey Mountain, these two peaks are the highest on the Beaverhead National Forest. The two subranges are quite different from each other in appearance. The East Pioneers have rugged, heavily glaciated peaks. Beaverhead County, Montana
Beaverhead County is the largest county by area in the U.S. state of Montana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,371. Its county seat is Dillon. The county was founded in 1865. Much of the perimeter of the county is the Continental Divide, including its entire border with the state of Idaho. The divide heads east into Montana at the county border with Ravalli County, between Lost Trail Pass and Chief Joseph Pass. History The county name is derived from a rock formation, which the Shoshone described as being shaped like a beaver's head. The original county seat was the gold-mining town of Bannack. Dillon, Montana
Dillon is a city in and the county seat of Beaverhead County, Montana, United States. The population was 3,880 at the 2020 census. The city was named for Sidney Dillon (1812–1892), president of Union Pacific Railroad. History Dillon was founded in the Beaverhead Valley as a railroad town in 1880. Originally named “Terminus” as it was temporarily the northernmost stop on the Utah and Northern Railway while it was under construction, in 1881, the community was renamed for Union Pacific Railroad President Sidney Dillon, who had directed the project of bringing the railroad through to Butte, Montana. The town's location was selected by the railroad in part because of its proximity to gold mines in the area. The first ore discovered in the Dillon area was silver. The Rocky Mountains, also known as the Rockies, are a major mountain range and the largest mountain system in North America.
