"Noch'" (ночь, Night) is a song by Anton Rubinstein. It appeared in German as Die Nacht ("Des Tages letztes Glühen"), a song for 2 voices & piano, Op. 48/7. The song became popular, with new English words by Sonny Miller as "Come Back My Love" (1941), in arrangement by Bernard Grün (sometimes mis-credited as "Green").Gramophone 1983 - Volume 60 - Page 919 In another Tauber recording, of Rubinstein's Come back my love (RO20508), the great tenor was in direct competition with an equally celebrated artist, John McCormack (His Master's Voice DA1809). Harold Rosenthal felt that Tauber's version with orchestra was "warmer and more fluid", whereas McCormack, with the pianist Gerald Moore, was more "deliberately poised"." Anton Rubinstein
Anton Grigoryevich Rubinstein (; ) was a Russian pianist, composer and conductor who founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He was the elder brother of Nikolai Rubinstein, who founded the Moscow Conservatory. As a pianist, Rubinstein ranks among the great 19th-century keyboard virtuosos. He became most famous for his series of historical recitals, seven enormous, consecutive concerts covering the history of piano music. Rubinstein played this series throughout Russia and Eastern Europe and in the United States when he toured there. Although best remembered as a pianist and educator (most notably as the composition teacher of Tchaikovsky), Rubinstein was also a prolific composer; he wrote 20 operas, the best known of which is '' The Demon''. Sonny Miller (July 18, 1960 – July 8, 2014) was an American cinematographer and waterman specializing in surfing and nature photography. He achieved success filming surfing related dramas, ''In God's Hands'' (1998). Bernard Grun (; 11 February 1901 28 December 1972) was a German. composer, conductor, and author. He is primarily remembered as the compiler of ''The Timetables of History''. Early life Grün was born on 11 February 1901 in Startsch, Moravia, Austria-Hungary (now Stařeč, Czech Republic).. He completed a degree in philosophy and a doctorate in law at Vienna and Prague, going on to study music theory at Vienna's national music academy under Alban Berg, Hans Gál, Felix von Weingartner, and Egon Wellesz. His Master's Voice was a British record label established in 1909. Whilst mainly releasing in the United Kingdom, the label also released in select European and African territories. Sister labels were also created, such as an Indian version, that lasted until 2003. "His Master's Voice" was a trademark of the Gramophone Company Limited (later part of EMI). John McCormack (tenor)
Count John Francis McCormack (14 June 1884 – 16 September 1945), was an Irish lyric tenor celebrated for his performances of the operatic and popular song repertoires, and renowned for his diction and breath control. He was also a Papal Count. McCormack became a naturalised American citizen before returning to live in Ireland. The Wrens were an American doo-wop vocal group from The Bronx, New York City. They are best known for their song "Come Back My Love" and " I'm Just the Kind of Guy". Career Founding The Wrens began in the Morrisania section of the Bronx in 1950. Neighborhood friends Waldo Champen (tenor, usually referred to as "Champ Rollow"), Francis "Frenchie" Concepcion (tenor/baritone lead), Archangel "Archie" Oropeza (baritone), and Raoul McLeod (bass) sang together under this name for around two years. They slowly drifted apart. Concepcion was determined to make the group last, and in 1952, he recruited two new members; tenor George Magnezid and bass James "Archie" Archer.
