Combined Arms Tactical Trainer
The Combined Arms Tactical Trainer (CATT) is the British Army's primary tactical battlegroup simulator, consisting of over 150 networked simulators which replicate the interiors of armoured vehicles. It has sites at Warminster in Wiltshire (near Waterloo Lines) and Sennelager in Germany, which can be operated separately or inter-linked. Built in the 1990s and in use since 2002, the system is a development of the United States Army's Close Combat Tactical Trainer. The simulator can train up to 450 military personnel on a virtual battlefield, and is run jointly by the Ministry of Defence, Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems. In 2005, the total cost of the program was stated to be £238 million, and the Defence Procurement Agency claimed it was the largest and most sophisticated virtual training facility in the world. Warminster
Warminster () is an ancient market town with a nearby garrison, and civil parish in south west Wiltshire, England, on the western edge of Salisbury Plain. The parish had a population of about 17,000 in 2011. The 11th-century Minster Church of St Denys stands near the River Were, which runs through the town and can be seen running through the town park. The name Warminster first occurs in the early 10th century. The High Street and Market Place have many fine buildings including the Athenaeum Centre, the Town Hall, St Lawrence Chapel, and The Old Bell, and a variety of independent shops. Waterloo Lines
Waterloo Lines is a British Army barracks on Imber Road in Warminster, Wiltshire, England. It is currently home to a number of Army specialist training schools and a sizeable portion of the Headquarters Field Army (not to be confused with Army HQ in Andover). Sennelager
Sennelager is a village in Germany that forms part of the City of Paderborn. It is notable for its association with the military since the 19th century. Location Sennelager lies around 5 km north of Paderborn city centre in the west of the landscape "Senne". The area falls under the administration of the / wards of the city. To the south between Sennelager and the city of Paderborn is Schloss Neuhaus, to the west Sande, and to the north Hövelhof. AVCATT
AVCATT (Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainer) is a mobile aviation training simulator developed by L-3 Communications, Link Simulation & Training for the United States Army in 2001. Entire units (suites) have been fielded. AVCATT is used by Active, Reserve and Army National Guard components. AVCATT supports unit collective and combined arms training for the AH-64, UH-60, CH-47 and OH-58 aircraft. Other AVCATT modules, such as the Non-Rated Crewmember Manned Module ((NCM3), a sub-system of AVCATT), can be linked to this base configuration to support specific unit training requirements. SIMNET
SIMNET was a wide area network with vehicle simulators and displays for real-time distributed combat simulation: tanks, helicopters and airplanes in a virtual battlefield. SIMNET was developed for and used by the United States military. SIMNET development began in the mid-1980s, was fielded starting in 1987, and was used for training until successor programs came online well into the 1990s. Origination and Purpose Jack Thorpe of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) saw the need for networked multi-user simulation. Interactive simulation equipment was very expensive, and reproducing training facilities was likewise expensive and time consuming.
