The Helio Sequence
The Helio Sequence is an American indie rock duo from Beaverton, Oregon, signed to Sub Pop. The band consists of Brandon Summers on vocals and guitars and Benjamin Weikel on drums and keyboards. History Summers and Weikel formed The Helio Sequence in 1999, and played their first show in Portland at the Mount Tabor Theater. The band has released three albums on Sub Pop, two on the Portland-based label Cavity Search and a self-released EP. Their fifth album, entitled ''Negotiations'', was released on September 11, 2012, on Sub Pop. The Helio Sequence toured the United States with the British band Keane in 2009, and in June 2010, they were Keane's support act in several gigs through Great Britain during the band's Night Train Tour. In September 2013, The Helio Sequence again toured the United States, this time co-headlining with Menomena. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". Cavity Search Records is a record label in Portland, Oregon that was formed in 1992 by Christopher Cooper and Denny Swofford. It is known for producing debut records by Hazel, Heatmiser, The Helio Sequence, King Black Acid, Richmond Fontaine, Danny Barnes, Saul Conrad, Pete Krebs, Korgy, Pete Krebs, Richmond Fontaine, and Elliott Smith. Cavity Search Records was recognized on their 26th anniversary by Mayor Ted Wheeler and the city of Portland. September 21, 2018 was proclaimed to be Cavity Search Records day for the label's contribution to the city's art and creative industry, and its commitment to uncovering and supporting local artistry. ''Young Effectuals'' is the second release from the Portland-based band The Helio Sequence. It was released on October 9, 2001, by Cavity Search Records. It is less pop-oriented than their later albums, and it features longer songs densely layered with synthesizers. Reception In his review of the album for AllMusic, Richie Unterberger says the Helio Sequence combine "dense electric textures in which the voice is just another hazy element with atmospheric keyboards, guitar, and electronic effects", but that the songs eventually blur "together into similar overall moods as the disc progresses."
