''Column X'' (german: Kolonne X) is a 1929 German silent crime film directed by Reinhold Schünzel and starring Schünzel, Ernst Stahl-Nachbaur and Grete Reinwald. The film attempted to imitate the style of American crime films, switched to a German setting.Prawer p. 89 It was shot at the Tempelhof Studios in Berlin and premiered at the city's Marmorhaus cinema. Reinhold Schünzel
Reinhold Schünzel (7 November 1888 – 11 November 1954) was a German actor and director, active in both Germany and the United States. The son of a German father and a Jewish mother, he was born in St. Pauli, the poorest part of Hamburg. Despite being of Jewish ancestry, Schünzel was allowed by the Nazis to continue making films for several years until he eventually left in 1937 to live abroad. Life in Germany Reinhold Schünzel (or Schuenzel) started his career as an actor in 1915 with a role in the film ''Werner Krafft''. He directed his first film in 1918's ''Mary Magdalene (1920 film), Mary Magdalene'' and in 1920 directed ''The Girl from Acker Street'' and ''Catherine the Great (1920 film), Catherine the Great''. Marmorhaus
The Marmorhaus (English: Marble House) is a former cinema located on the Kurfürstendamm in Berlin. Opened in 1913, it takes its name from a large marble façade. Designed by the architect Hugo Pál, the walls of the foyer and auditorium were decorated by the expressionist artist Cesar Klein. Otto Wallburg
Otto Wallburg (21 February 1889 – 29 October 1944) was a German actor and Kabarett performer. He was a prolific film actor during the late silent and early sound era. Wallburg was born Otto Maximilian Wasserzug in Berlin, the son of a Jewish banker. He drifted into stage acting, but served in the German Army during the First World War and was wounded on the Eastern Front after winning an Iron Cross. From 1926 onwards he worked in the large German film industry, including many productions made by UFA. When the Nazis came to power in 1933 he left Germany and moved to Austria where he continued to work in film. He later moved to France and then on to the Netherlands. He was arrested following the 1940 German invasion of the Netherlands. He was held for a while at Westerbork transit camp, and later moved to Auschwitz where he was killed.
