Columbus is located on Arkansas Highway 73, west-northwest of Hope, Arkansas, Hope. Columbus has a post office with ZIP code 71831. Columbus was a farming community up until the 1960s. There was once a bank owned by the Wilson family of Columbus, along with several stores and a school, the most notable store being a general store owned by David Mitchell. The stores have since been torn down. During the 1940s, Columbus school consolidated with Hope School District. The old gym was recently burnt, leaving only two doorways. Arkansas ( ) is a landlocked state in the South Central United States. Hempstead County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,609. As of the 2020 census, the population decreased to 20,065. The county seat is Hope. Hempstead County is Arkansas's fourth county, formed on December 15, 1818, alongside Clark and Pulaski counties. The county is named for Edward Hempstead, a delegate to the U.S. Congress from the Missouri Territory, which included present-day Arkansas at the time. It is an alcohol prohibition or dry county. Historic Washington State Park is located in Hempstead County some nine miles northwest of Hope in the historic village of Washington, Arkansas. The state park opened in 1973 as "Old Washington Historic State Park", but the "Old" was dropped from the name in 2006. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Hope is a city in Hempstead County in southwestern Arkansas, United States. Hope is the county seat of Hempstead County and the principal city of the Hope Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Hempstead and Nevada counties. As of the 2010 census the population was 10,095, and in 2019 the population was estimated at 9,599.
