Columbia Southern Railway
The Columbia Southern Railway built a rail line extending from Biggs (on the Columbia River) south to Shaniko, Oregon, U.S. The company was incorporated on March 5, 1897, and intended to continue beyond Shaniko to Prineville, with a branch to Canyon City. Operations began October 6, 1897, on from Biggs to Wasco, and the line was extended to Moro on January 13, 1899, Grass Valley on March 27, 1900, and Shaniko on May 13, 1900. The Union Pacific Railroad (UP), owner of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company (OR&N), which followed the Columbia River through Biggs, gained control of the Columbia Southern in 1905, and leased it to the OR&N on June 30, 1906. The properties of the OR&N and Columbia Southern Railway were conveyed to new UP subsidiary Oregon–Washington Railroad and Navigation Company on December 23, 1910. Kent, Oregon
Kent is an unincorporated community in Sherman County, Oregon, United States. Kent has a post office with a ZIP code 97033. Kent lies at the intersection of U.S. Route 97 and Dobie Point Road, between Grass Valley to the north and Shaniko to the south. Kent was the site of a railway station, originally called ''Guthrie'', on the Columbia Southern Railway. The name of the community stemmed from a drawing from a group of names submitted by local residents that was drawn out of a hat by Kent's first postmaster, according to the original residents. Milton H. Bennett was that postmaster, who ran the post office beginning in about 1887. The name was suggested because it was short and easy to write. Columbia Southern Hotel
The Columbia Southern Hotel, also known as the Shaniko Hotel, is a historic hotel, located in Shaniko, Oregon, United States. Built by the Columbia Southern Railway in 1900–1902 at the southern terminus of its line, the hotel was and remains the most imposing structure in Shaniko. It was the hub and focal point of the community during the heyday of the local wool industry in the early decades of the 20th century. In addition to lodging, it served as saloon, bank, stagecoach stop, dance hall, and general gathering place. Columbia Southern Railway Passenger Station And Freight Warehouse
The Columbia Southern Railway Passenger Station and Freight Warehouse is a historic train station at the intersection of Clark and Fulton Streets in Wasco, Oregon. The station was built in 1898 by the Columbia Southern Railway as part of a new line connecting inland Oregon to the Columbia River. The Wasco depot served both passenger and freight trains along the route, which reached as far south as Shaniko and spurred economic development in the region. While the Oregon Trunk Railway's new line to Bend became the main inland Oregon route in 1911, the Columbia Southern route continued to serve Sherman County as a local route. Passenger service to Wasco ended in 1936, and a 1964 flood damaged the line severely enough to permanently end freight services as well. Interstate Commerce Commission
The Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) was a regulatory agency in the United States created by the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887. The agency's original purpose was to regulate railroads (and later trucking) to ensure fair rates, to eliminate rate discrimination, and to regulate other aspects of common carriers, including interstate bus lines and telephone companies. Congress expanded ICC authority to regulate other modes of commerce beginning in 1906. Throughout the 20th century, several of ICC's authorities were transferred to other federal agencies. The ICC was abolished in 1995, and its remaining functions were transferred to the Surface Transportation Board. The City of Prineville Railway is an class III shortline railroad connecting the U.S. cities of Prineville, Oregon, Prineville and Redmond, Oregon, Redmond, Oregon. Trains can connect with the BNSF and UPRR at Prineville Jct. 3 miles north of Redmond, Oregon. History The railroad had its origins in the late 1800s, when the city of Prineville was bypassed by the Oregon Trunk Railroad, resulting in the city losing business to nearby towns that did have railroad service, such as Bend, Oregon, Bend. After two failed attempts in the early 1910s, the city decided to take matters into its own hands and in 1916 chartered a railroad. The line opened in 1918. After struggling early on, the railroad eventually was able to gain new customers in the sawmills that opened up near Prineville to take advantage of the recently opened timber of the Ochoco Mountains east of the city.
