Columbia Data Center
Columbia Data Center is Microsoft's data center in Quincy, Washington. Property at Quincy was purchased in 2006; the building opened in April, 2007; and the data center reached operational status in May, 2007. It was said to be the largest data center in the world as of 2015. The company located there due to low land costs, abundant data fiber, and extremely low cost electricity provided by Grant County PUD for as little as 1.9 or 2.5 cents per kilowatt-hour. Building began with a facility in 2006 and several expansions followed, occupying with of floorspace in two buildings on a complex by 2016. Quincy is a city in Grant County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,543 at the 2020 census. History Geologic history Quincy lies atop a part of the Columbia River Basalt Group which is overlain by Pleistocene outburst flood deposits. The Missoula Floods had one of their outlets at Trinidad, close to Quincy and another near Ancient Lakes, which includes the Ancient Lakes of the Columbia Valley AVA. Glacial erratics carried from as far away as Montana can be found nearby. The area also has an abundance of rimrock. Grant County PUD
Public Utility District No. 2 of Grant County, or Grant County PUD, is a public utility district in north central Washington state. It is owned by its customers and governed by a Board of Commissioners elected by the customer-owners. Though it is not regulated by another governmental unit, a PUD is, by state statute, a nonprofit corporation. PUDs must comply with state regulations for municipal corporations. The local customer-owner of the PUD receives benefits in the form of reduced rates for service. Grant County PUD operates two hydroelectric projects, Priest Rapids Dam and Wanapum Dam.
