Michael Morton (1864 – 11 January 1931) was an English dramatist in the early 20th century. Career ''Detective Sparkes'' Morton's comedy called ''Detective Sparkes'' opened at the Garrick Theatre in August 1909 to good reviews. He also directed the production which ran into October for a total of 64 performances. ''The Yellow Ticket'' In 1914, Morton's play, ''The Yellow Ticket'' ran 183 performances on Broadway and starred Florence Reed and John Barrymore. It was adapted to the screen and, due to its popularity, several filmed versions were made in the silent era alone. The first, '' The Yellow Passport'' (1916), was directed by Edwin August and starred Clara Kimball Young. The second version, ''The Yellow Ticket'' (1918), starred Fannie Ward, Warner Oland and Milton Sills. A German version called ''Der Gelbe Schein'' was produced in 1918 and starred Pola Negri. William Makepeace Thackeray (; 18 July 1811 – 24 December 1863) was a British novelist, author and illustrator. ''The Newcomes: Memoirs of a Most Respectable Family'' is a novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, first published in 1854 and 1855. Publication ''The Newcomes'' was published serially over about two years, as Thackeray himself says in one of the novel's final chapters. The novel shows its serial origin: it is very long (an undated but clearly very old edition with tiny type fills 551 pages) and its events occur over many years and in several countries before the reader reaches the predictable conclusion. The main part of ''The Newcomes'' is set a decade or two after the action of '' Vanity Fair'', and some of the characters in ''Vanity Fair'' are mentioned peripherally in ''The Newcomes''. Herbert Beerbohm Tree
Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree (17 December 1852 – 2 July 1917) was an English actor and theatre manager. Tree began performing in the 1870s. By 1887, he was managing the Haymarket Theatre in the West End, winning praise for adventurous programming and lavish productions, and starring in many of its productions. In 1899, he helped fund the rebuilding, and became manager, of His Majesty's Theatre. Again, he promoted a mix of Shakespeare and classic plays with new works and adaptations of popular novels, giving them spectacular productions in this large house, and often playing leading roles. His wife, actress Helen Maud Holt, often played opposite him and assisted him with management of the theatres. Although Tree was regarded as a versatile and skilled actor, particularly in character roles, by his later years his technique was seen as mannered and old-fashioned.
