Colonel Abrams
Colonel Abrams (May 25, 1949 – November 24, 2016) was an American musician, singer, songwriter, dancer and actor. Early life Colonel Abrams (his real name) was born in Detroit, Michigan. His family later moved to East 13 Street, in Manhattan's East Village. Career From an early age, Abrams began playing the guitar and piano. He was in several early bands; among them Heavy Impact – in which he played both guitar and keyboards alongside Joe Wells (guitar), Lemar Washington (guitar), Marston "Buffy" Freeman (bass guitar), Ronald Simmons (drums), Harry Jones (trumpet), Tony Moliere (trumpet) and Barbara Mills (saxophone). In 1976, he formed Conservative Manor, 94 East (the band featuring Prince on lead guitar). He became popular on the New York underground scene via radio and club play, and had his first major hit in 1984 with "Music Is the Answer", on the independent label Streetwise. Piano
The piano is a stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are struck by wooden hammers that are coated with a softer material (modern hammers are covered with dense wool felt; some early pianos used leather). ''Colonel Abrams'' is the self-titled debut studio album by American musician Colonel Abrams, released in 1985 through MCA Records. Most of the songs were written by Abrams and his brother, Marston Freeman. Commercial performance The album peaked at No. 13 on the R&B albums chart. It also reached No. 75 on the ''Billboard'' 200. The album features the singles " Trapped", which peaked at No. 20 on the Hot Soul Singles chart and No. 1 on the Hot Dance/Disco chart, and "I'm Not Gonna Let", which reached No. 7 on the Hot Soul Singles chart and No. 1 on the Hot Dance/Disco chart. Richard James Burgess (born 29 June 1949) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, composer, author, manager, marketer and inventor. Burgess's music career spans more than 50 years. He came to prominence in the early 1980s as co-founder and co-lead singer of the synthpop band Landscape, which released a top-5 hit in 1981 with the single "Einstein a Go-Go". Burgess is one of the main composers of Landscape's music, and made major musical and lyrical contributions to the band's songs. Steven Machat (born October 18, 1952) is an American entertainment mogul, lawyer, and the producer of ''Bird on a Wire'', the documentary film of the Leonard Cohen 1972 European tour. Trapped (Colonel Abrams Song)
"Trapped" is a song by American musician Colonel Abrams, released in 1985 as the first single from his self-titled debut album. It has since become known as Abrams' signature song and still receives airplay on dance radio stations in the UK and the US. This song has arguably remained Abrams' biggest hit on both sides of the Atlantic, topping the US Hot Dance Club Play chart for one week in September 1985 and peaking at number 20 on the soul chart. Overseas, it went to number three on the UK Singles Chart. Produced by Richard Burgess in 1984, "Trapped" is widely considered as the precursor to house music, referred to as a proto-house track and a precursor to garage house. 94 East
94 East was a Minneapolis-based funk group formed in December 1975 by Pepe Willie, the former husband of Prince's cousin. Willie was one of the people responsible for getting Prince's career up and running, and soon enlisted the talents of a teenage Prince and his childhood best friend, André Cymone. Prince also composed one song for them, "Just Another Sucker". 94 East was fronted by Colonel Abrams, one of the dance music's early pioneers, who went on to a short solo career with a cluster of big hits. The band disbanded when Prince became a star in his own right. The 94 East recordings were recorded between December 1975 and February 1979.
