Colombia At The 2008 Summer Olympics
Colombia competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The country sent 68 athletes to compete in 15 sports (archery, athletics, boxing, rowing, cycling, equestrian, artistic gymnastics, judo, weightlifting, wrestling, swimming, taekwondo, and table tennis), making this Colombia's largest ever delegation to the Olympics. Originally, Colombia left Beijing with two medals, a silver and a bronze won by weightlifter Diego Salazar and wrestler Jackeline Rentería respectively. Weightlifter Leydi Solís originally finished fourth, but was promoted to a silver medal after both gold and bronze medalist of the 69 kg category were disqualified following a positive anti-doping test of their respective 2008 samples. Natalia "Nati" Sánchez Echeverri (born May 20, 1983) is a Colombian recurve archer. She is a two-time Olympian, contesting the 2008 and 2016 Games, a World Championship bronze medalist, and a two-time Pan American champion in the women's team event. The men's 200 metres at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place on 18–20 August at the Beijing National Stadium. There were 63 competitors from 53 nations. The men's 100 metres sprint event at the 2008 Olympic Games took place on 15 and 16 August at the Beijing National Stadium. Eighty athletes from 64 nations competed. Each nation was limited to 3 athletes per rules in force since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The final was won by Jamaican Usain Bolt in a world record time of 9.69 seconds. The men's marathon at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place on 24 August at 7:30am in Beijing, ending in the Beijing National Stadium. It was (as of today) the last time in Summer Olympics history that the start and/or finish of the men's marathon route was located inside the Olympic Stadium. Ninety-five athletes from 56 nations competed. The winner of the event was Samuel Wanjiru of Kenya, who set an Olympic record in the time of two hours, six minutes, and 32 seconds. The Women's team archery event at the 2008 Summer Olympics was part of the archery programme and took place at the Olympic Green Archery Field. Ranking Round was scheduled for August 9 and elimination rounds and Finals took place on August 10. All archery is done at a range of 70 metres, with targets 1.22 metres in diameter.
