Canal de Caen à la Mer ( en, Canal from Caen to the sea, also called the "Caen Canal") is a short canal in the department (préfecture) of Calvados, France, connecting the Port of Caen, in the city of Caen, downstream to the town of Ouistreham and the English Channel. Running from north north-east to south south-west, the canal runs parallel to the Orne River which feeds it, it is long, and comprises two locks. August Thyssen
August Thyssen (; Eschweiler, 17 May 1842 – Landsberg Castle, Ratingen, near Kettwig, 4 April 1926) was a German industrialist. Career and marriage After he had completed his studies at the RWTH Aachen University, University of Karlsruhe and a commercial school (Institut Supérieur du Commerce de l’État) at Antwerp he like his brother Joseph Thyssen joined the bank of his father Friedrich Thyssen. Fremington is a large village, civil parish and former Manorialism, manor in North Devon, England, the historic centre of which is situated three miles (5 km) west of Barnstaple. The Société Métallurgique de Normandie (Metallurgic Company of Normandy), or ''SMN'' was a steel mill in Caen (Colombelles), Normandy. It opened in 1912 and closed in 1993. History In 1910, the Thyssen Group obtained the concession for mining iron in the lower region of Calvados between Soumont and Urville. The ''Société des Hauts Fourneaux et Aciéries'' was created by Baron Thyssen two years later, in 1912. The plant was built along the right bank of the River Orne and of the Canal de Caen à la Mer. It originally covered an area 160 hectares and produced 250 000 tons of steel in 1938. Product was exported to the UK, Scandinavia, Spain, Italy, North Africa and other coastal regions of France.
