Field hockey is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with ten outfield players and a goalkeeper. Teams must drive a round hockey ball by hitting it with a hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, synthetic field, or indoor boarded surface. The stick is made of wood, carbon fibre, fibreglass, or a combination of carbon fibre and fibreglass in different quantities. The stick has two sides; one rounded and one flat; only the flat face of the stick is allowed to progress the ball. During play, goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body. A player's hand is considered part of the stick if holding the stick. Field Hockey At The 1984 Summer Olympics – Women's Tournament
The women's field hockey tournament at the 1984 Summer Olympics was the 2nd edition of the field hockey event for women at the Summer Olympic Games. It was held from July 31 – August 10, 1984. Six teams competed in a single round-robin tournament. The Netherlands won the tournament, finishing top of the pool at the culmination of the tournament, West Germany won the silver medal finishing second. The United States and Australia played out a penalty shoot-out for the bronze medal after finishing equal on points and goal difference in the round robin stage, which the United States won 10–5. 1984 Summer Olympics
The 1984 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXIII Olympiad and also known as Los Angeles 1984) were an international multi-sport event held from July 28 to August 12, 1984, in Los Angeles, California, United States. It marked the second time that Los Angeles had hosted the Games, the first being in 1932. California was the home state of the incumbent U.S. President Ronald Reagan, who officially opened the Games. These were the first Summer Olympic Games under the IOC presidency of Juan Antonio Samaranch. The 1984 Games were boycotted by a total of fourteen Eastern Bloc countries, including the Soviet Union and East Germany, in response to the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan; Romania and Yugoslavia were the only Socialist European states that opted to attend the Games. Eric Pearce (field Hockey)
Eric Robert Pearce (born 29 October 1931) is an Indian-born Australian former international field hockey player who represented Australia at four Olympic Games and numerous other international matches. He was born in Jabalpur, India. In his home state of Western Australia, he played as a striker for 19 years. Playing career Eric is one of five international-level hockey playing brothers, the others being Cec, Mel, Gordon and Julian. His daughter Colleen Pearce was part of the Australian national hockey team that came third at the 1983 World Cup and fourth at the 1984 Olympics. He is considered to be one of the finest field hockey players to have represented Australia. Following the partition of India, his father Cec and elder brothers Cec and Mel settled in Perth, Western Australia in 1947.
