Collectors Club Of Chicago
The origins of the Collectors Club of Chicago (CCC) are traced to the informal meetings during the 1920s of specialized Collecting, collectors residing in the Chicago area. The CCC was incorporated in accordance with the General Not For Profit Corporation Act on October 13, 1928, in the State of Illinois, with nine members being named directors and with meetings being conducted in members' homes. Meetings continued at members' homes until World War II, at which time the meetings lapsed. On Sunday, November 26, 1944, a reorganization meeting of the then-charter-named "Chicago Collectors Club" was held at the home of Maj. Max G. Johl. Today's CCC is the result of that reorganization effort. In 1967, CCC member Richard McPherren Cabeen offered the Collectors Club of Chicago his four-level brownstone home, located in Chicago's downtown "Gold Coast" area at 1029 North Dearborn Street. Collecting
The hobby of collecting includes seeking, locating, acquiring, organizing, cataloging, displaying, storing, and maintaining items that are of interest to an individual ''collector''. Collections differ in a wide variety of respects, most obviously in the nature and scope of the objects contained, but also in purpose, presentation, and so forth. The range of possible subjects for a collection is practically unlimited, and collectors have realised a vast number of these possibilities in practice, although some are much more popular than others. In collections of manufactured items, the objects may be antique or simply collectable. Antiques are collectable items at least 100 years old, while other collectables are arbitrarily recent. Richard McPherren Cabeen
Richard McPherren (Sandy) Cabeen (May 11, 1887 – April 13, 1969) was a well-known philatelist in the Chicago area, and one of the foremost writers of philatelic literature. He married Blema Eulaila Meagher on October 28, 1910. Collecting interests Cabeen was interested in various aspects of American philately, but tended to specialize. He was particularly interested in the United States 3-cent 1851-57 postage stamps, and along with Dr. Carroll Chase, was able to successfully plate the stamp, which involves identifying the position of each stamp as it would have appeared on the original printed sheet. In addition to collecting and studying such classic United States stamps, Cabeen also directed his attention and studies to postal history of Chicago and Illinois. American Philatelic Society
The American Philatelic Society (APS) is the largest nonprofit stamp collecting foundation of philately in the world. Both the membership and interests of the society are worldwide. History The organization, originally named the ''American Philatelic Association'', was established on September 14, 1886 in New York City, and the following day elected John K. Tiffany as its first president. Voting membership was granted to 219 individuals who paid two bits (25¢) for the privilege. The organization's name was changed to its present name for a few months in 1897, then back, then permanently in 1908. Society membership reached over 4,000 in 1940, and included U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes. The American Topical Association (ATA) is a US-based philatelic society and the largest organization devoted to topical stamp collecting. It was established in 1949 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by Jerome (Jerry) Husak. It currently serves members in over 60 countries. ATA publishes ''Topical Time'', its bimonthly journal. It also publishes numerous handbooks and maintains many checklists listing hundreds of stamps by topic.
