Colin William Carstairs Turner
Sir Colin William Carstairs Turner CBE DFC (4 January 1922 – 21 March 2014) was a British businessman and Conservative Party politician. The son of Colin C.W. Turner, he was educated at Highgate School. He had one sister and two half brothers. In 1949 he married Evelyn Mary, daughter of late Claude H. Buckard, Enfield. Together they had three sons and one daughter; 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He died in 2014 at the age of 92, at his home in West Runton in Norfolk. Retrieved 20 October 2016. Distinguished Flying Cross (United Kingdom)
The Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) is the third-level military decoration awarded to officers, and since 1993 to other ranks, of the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force and other services, and formerly to officers of other Commonwealth countries, for "an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy". History The award was established on 3 June 1918, shortly after the formation of the Royal Air Force (RAF), with the Royal Warrant published on 5 December 1919. William Hamling
William Hamling (10 August 1912 – 20 March 1975) was a British Labour Party politician. Hamling was educated at Liverpool University and was a signals officer in the Royal Marines during World War II. Hamling contested Southport in 1945, Liverpool Wavertree in 1950 and 1951, Woolwich West in 1955 and 1959, and Torquay at the 1955 by-election, before he was finally elected as member of parliament (MP) for the Woolwich West constituency at the 1964 general election, and held the seat until his death in 1975, aged 62. The resulting Woolwich West by-election was won by the Conservative candidate Peter Bottomley. William Steward (UK Politician)
Sir William Arthur Steward (20 April 1901 – May 1987) was a British Conservative party politician, who served as Member of Parliament for Woolwich West from 1950 to 1959. Steward was educated at Norwich Model School and privately and became a restaurateur and farmer. He served as senior catering officer with the Royal Air Force during World War II, obtaining the rank of squadron leader. He was a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Distillers and a member of the Council of the Caterers' Association. The Veeraswamy restaurant in Regent Street, which had originated as the Indian Pavilion restaurant at the 1924-5 British Empire Exhibition in Wembley Park, was taken over by Steward in 1930. He was married to a singer and artist of the time Greta Gaye. Throughout the 1930s trade was very difficult but the couple used great resourcefulness and came through the challenging times.
