Colin Baker (Welsh Footballer)
Colin Walter Baker (18 December 1934 – 11 April 2021) was a Welsh professional footballer. A wing half, he spent his entire professional career playing for his home town club Cardiff City, making over 300 appearances during a 13-year spell with the ''Bluebirds''. He also won 7 caps for the Wales national team during his career and was part of the squad for the 1958 FIFA World Cup. Club career Born in Tremorfa, Cardiff, Baker had to play rugby at school, but preferred football, and soon joined Cardiff Nomads. Baker joined Cardiff City from Cardiff Nomads as an amateur in 1951. He became a part-time professional between 1952 and 1953 whilst completing his National Service in the Royal Air Force. He became a full-time professional in 1953. During summer months, Baker would stay fit by playing Baseball for Adamsdown. Cardiff (; cy, Caerdydd ) is the capital and largest city of Wales. The 1957–58 season was the 78th season of competitive football in England. The season ended with Wolverhampton Wanderers as First Division champions after scoring 103 goals and Bolton Wanderers as FA Cup winners. However, the season is remembered most for the Munich air disaster which occurred on 6 February 1958 and involved Manchester United on the return flight from a European Cup quarter-final win in Yugoslavia. 23 people died as a result of their injuries in the crash, including eight of the club's players. The 1956–57 season was the 77th season of competitive football in England. Manchester United won the First Division to become English football champions for the fifth time. UEFA Cup Winners' Cup
The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was a European football club competition contested annually by the winners of domestic cup competitions. The cup was, chronologically, the second seasonal inter-European club competition organised by UEFA.
