Edmund Colhoun
Edmund Ross Colhoun (6 May 1821 – 17 February 1897) was a rear admiral of the United States Navy who served during the Mexican War and the American Civil War, in which he was commended for his participation in the bombardment and capture of Fort Fisher. Naval career Service from 1839 to 1853 Colhoun was born at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, on 6 May 1821 and was appointed a midshipman on 1 April 1839. He was attached to the sloop-of-war in the Brazil Squadron from 1839 to 1841, then to the frigate in the Mediterranean Squadron and Brazil Squadron from 1842 to 1844. He then attended the Philadelphia Naval School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1845 and, after completing his studies, was promoted to passed midshipman on 2 July 1845. Colhoun next served aboard the frigate from 1846 to 1847, seeing action in the Mexican War, first under Commodore David Conner in the first attack on Alvarado, Mexico, and then under Commodore Matthew C. John Colhoun (born 15 May 1913, Castlederg, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland – 5 January 2002, Stockport, Cheshire, England) was a British mycologist, phytopathologist, and professor of cryptogamic botany. (with a comprehensive list of Colhoun's publications) For a one-year term from 1963 to 1964 he was the president of the British Mycological Society. Mabel Colhoun (2 November 19051992), was a Derry-based pioneering photographer, teacher and archaeologist. Biography Mabel Remington Colhoun was born on 2 November 1905 in Derry to John Colhoun and Lizzie Johnston Gordon. Her family were originally from Inishowen, County Donegal. Colhoun trained in the Froebel educational technique. She worked as a teacher and was the first principal of the Preparatory Department in the Londonderry High School. She began working there in 1936 and retired in 1969. Colhoun also started a school in Deanfield, Derry and helped establish nursery schools throughout the 1950s and 1960s as the chair of the ''Londonderry Nursery School Association''. She worked extensively on the area from which her family came, and her work was published in ''The Heritage of Inishowen: Its Archaeology, Heritage and Folklore''. USS ''Colhoun'' (DD-85/APD-2) was a in the United States Navy during World War I and later redesignated APD-2 in World War II. She was the first Navy ship named for Edmund Ross Colhoun, Edmund Colhoun. Launched in 1918, she remained on convoy duty for the final few months of World War I, and she then operated out of the Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic for several years until being decommissioned in 1922. Returning to service in 1940 as a high-speed troop transport, ''Colhoun'' was dispatched to support the Guadalcanal campaign early in World War II. While unloading supplies to the island on 30 August 1942, she was attacked by aircraft of the Empire of Japan, and sunk with the loss of 51 men. ''Colhoun'' was launched 10 April 1944 by Todd-Pacific Shipbuilding Corp., Seattle, Washington; sponsored by Captain K. K. Johnson, WAC; and commissioned 8 July 1944.
