Colgate is an unincorporated community in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States, straddling the county line with Waukesha County. Colgate is located partially in the village of Richfield, and the town of Lisbon. Its ZIP Code is 53017. The population is around 300, up from about 50 in 1983. Geography The Fox River, an Illinois River tributary, rises in a small, unnamed swamp, southeast of the community of Colgate. The Bark River also originates to the north and runs in a southwesterly direction. Alice In Dairyland
Alice in Dairyland is a program that is meant to promote Wisconsin's diverse agriculture industry. A young woman is selected every year to be Wisconsin's Agriculture Ambassador. As a contracted public relations specialist, she works with the media, educates the public, speaks with rural and urban audiences, and teaches students about all aspects of the Wisconsin agricultural industry. The program began as the Dairy Queen program in 1934, and was renamed to Alice in Dairyland in 1948. Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin
Manitowish Waters is a town in Vilas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 566 in the 2010 census. The unincorporated community Manitowish Waters, is also located within the town. History In 1934, at the Little Bohemia Lodge on Little Star Lake, the FBI and Dillinger Gang were involved in a shootout, which resulted in the accidental shooting death of one local Civilian Conservation Corps worker and severely injuring two other workers by federal agents who mistook them for members of the gang. Agent W. Carter Baum was also shot and killed by Baby Face Nelson in a brief gunfight a short distance away, which resulted in another special agent and a local constable being wounded. All six members of the gang escaped the incident unharmed. The lodge, then owned by Emil Wanatka, remains in existence as a restaurant today without lodging. Dillinger Gang
The Dillinger Gang was a group of American Depression-era bank robbers led by John Dillinger. The gang gained notoriety for a successful string of bank robberies, using modern tools and tactics, in the Midwestern United States from September 1933 to July 1934. During this crime spree, the gang killed 10 and wounded 7. They managed to pull off three jail breaks which wounded two guards and killed a sheriff. The increased use of new law enforcement techniques by the newly strengthened Bureau of Investigation (FBI predecessor) led to the dismantling of the gang. Rugby Junction is an unincorporated community in the town of Polk, Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. History The night of October 16, 1901, two Chicago-bound freight trains collided on the Wisconsin Central Railway tracks between Colgate and Rugby Junction. Two cars derailed, but no injuries were reported. The Wisconsin Central Railway amalgamated with the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie in 1961 to form the Soo Line Railroad. In a drastic effort to cut costs, the Soo Line created the Lake States Transportation Division, but that did not come out too good. Wisconsin Central Railway (1897–1954)
The Wisconsin Central Railway Company was created in 1897 when the Wisconsin Central Railroad (1871–99) was reorganized from bankruptcy. In 1954, it reverted to the name Wisconsin Central Railroad Company. The railroad was merged into the Soo Line Railroad in 1961.
