Ellen Maria Colfax
Ellen Maria Wade Colfax (July 26, 1836 – March 4, 1911) was the second wife of Schuyler Colfax, who became the first House speaker to be elected vice president when he ran on a ticket headed by Ulysses S. Grant in 1868. She was born in Andover, Ohio in 1836. Biography On November 18, 1868, just two weeks after the election, Ellen Maria Wade married the man who had defeated her uncle, Senator Benjamin Franklin Wade of Ohio, in the race for the Republican vice presidential nomination. They had one son, Schuyler Colfax III, in April 1870. Her husband, Schuyler Colfax was inaugurated as the 17th vice president on March 4, 1869, and served until March 4, 1873. Colfax station is an Amtrak train station in Colfax, California. Served by the ''California Zephyr'', it is unstaffed. The station was built in 1905 by the Southern Pacific Railroad and was restored in the early 21st century; in addition to a waiting room, the building also houses the Colfax Heritage Museum. The platform is movable to accommodate Union Pacific rotary snowplows, which are liable to scrape a platform eight inches above top of rail. Between January 1, 1998, and February 13, 2000, a single round-trip of the ''Capitol Corridor'' terminated at Colfax. This service ended because of low ridership. Colfax Avenue is the main street that runs east–west through the Denver metropolitan area in Colorado. As U.S. Highway 40, it was one of two principal highways serving Denver before the Interstate Highway System was constructed. In the local street system, it lies 15 blocks north of the zero meridian (Ellsworth Avenue, one block south of 1st Avenue), and would thus otherwise be known as 15th Avenue. The street was named for the 19th-century politician Schuyler Colfax. At just over 50 miles in length, it is known as the "longest continuous commercial street in America." Lincoln Peak is a tall peak subsidiary to Mount Baker in the Cascade Range in the U.S. state of Washington. It lies within the Mount Baker Wilderness and Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.
