Nicola Coleti (or Coletti; 1680–1765) was an Italian Catholic priest and historian. Life and works Born in Venice, he studied at Padua, where he received the degree of Doctor. He was sent to the church of San Moisè at Venice, and there devoted himself to historical and antiquarian research. His first work of importance was a new edition of Ferdinando Ughelli's ''Italia Sacra'' published in ten volumes from 1717 to 1722. Besides correcting many errors, Coleti continued Ughelli's history to the beginning of the eighteenth century. Coleti then undertook the compilation of his large work entitled ''Collectio Conciliorum''. Up to this time there had been two standard histories of the councils, ''Sacrorum conciliorum nova et amplissima collectio'' by Philippe Labbe and Gabriel Cossart (1671–72), its supplement compiled by Étienne Baluze (of which only the first volume was published), and the collection of Jean Hardouin (1715). Ferdinando Ughelli
Ferdinando Ughelli (21 March 1595 – 19 May 1670) was an Italian Cistercian monk and church historian. Biography He was born in Florence. He entered the Cistercian Order and was sent to the Gregorian University in Rome, where he studied under the Jesuits Francesco Piccolomini and John de Lugo. He filled many important posts in his order, being Abbot of Badia a Settimo near Florence, and, from 1638, Abbot of Tre Fontane in Rome. He was skilled in ecclesiastical history. To encourage him in this work and to defray the expense of the journeys it entailed, Pope Alexander VII granted him an annual pension of 500 scudi. He was a consultor of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum and theologian to Cardinal Carlo de' Medici; he was frequently offered the episcopal dignity, which he refused. He died in Rome in 1670 and was buried in his abbatial church. Literary works His chief work is ''Italia sacra sive de episcopis Italiae''"Sacred Italy, or Concerning the Bishops of Italy".
