Coleshill House
Coleshill House was a country house in England, near the village of Coleshill, in the Vale of White Horse. Historically, the house was in Berkshire but since boundary changes in 1974 its site is in Oxfordshire. The building may have been designed by Inigo Jones, and built by Sir Roger Pratt around 1660. Nikolaus Pevsner described it as "the best Jonesian mid C17 house in England". It was gutted by fire in 1952 and demolished in 1958. The Coleshill Estate is now owned by the National Trust. Background Historically, the manor was owned by the Edingdon family. William Edington, Bishop of Winchester, gave the land to the priory of Bonnes-Hommes of the Augustinian Brothers of Penitence, that he founded at Edington, Wiltshire in 1351. The priory was closed in the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and acquired by Thomas Seymour, fourth husband of Henry VIII's widow Catherine Parr. Thomas Seymour, 1st Baron Seymour of Sudeley, KG, PC (20 March 1549) was a brother of Jane Seymour, the third wife of King Henry VIII. With his brother, Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset and Lord Protector of England, he vied for control of their nephew, the young King Edward VI (). In 1547 Seymour became the fourth husband of Catherine Parr, who had been the sixth and last wife and queen of Henry VIII. During his marriage to Catherine Parr, Seymour involved the future Queen Elizabeth I (then 14 years old), who resided in his household, in flirtatious and possibly sexual behaviour. Earl of Radnor, in the County of Wiltshire, is a title which has been created twice. It was first created in the Peerage of England in 1679 for John Robartes, 2nd Baron Robartes, a notable political figure of the reign of Charles II. The earldom was created for a second time in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1765 when William Bouverie, 2nd Viscount Folkestone, was made Earl of Radnor. The Bouverie family descends from William des Bouverie, a prominent London merchant. He was created a baronet of St Catherine Cree Church, London, in the Baronetage of Great Britain in 1714. Jacob Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone (bapt. 14 October 1694 – 17 February 1761) was an English politician, known as Sir Jacob Bouverie, 3rd Baronet from 1737 to 1747. Early life Lord Folkestone was born Jacob des Bouverie and baptised on 14 October 1694 in St Katharine Cree, London, the son of Sir William des Bouverie, 1st Baronet and his second wife Anne Urry (daughter and heiress of David Urry of London). On 21 November 1736, he succeeded his elder brother, Edward, in the baronetcy and to Longford Castle. He dropped the prefix "des" in his surname by Act of Parliament on 22 April 1737. William Bouverie, 1st Earl Of Radnor
William Bouverie, 1st Earl of Radnor FRS (26 February 1725 – 28 January 1776) was a British peer, styled Hon. William Bouverie from 1747 until 1761. He was the eldest son of Jacob Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone and Mary Clarke, and was educated at University College, Oxford. On 8 November 1750, he was appointed a deputy lieutenant of Wiltshire. On 22 September 1758, he was appointed a deputy lieutenant of Berkshire. He succeeded his father as Viscount Folkestone on 17 February 1761 and in the office of Recorder of Salisbury on 14 April 1761. On 31 October 1765, he was created Earl of Radnor and Baron Pleydell-Bouverie. Radnor was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society on 17 December 1767. Shrivenham is a village and civil parish in the Vale of White Horse, Oxfordshire, England, about south-west of Faringdon. The village is close to the county boundary with Wiltshire and about east-northeast of Swindon. The 2011 Census recorded the parish population as 2,347. The parish is within the historic boundaries of Berkshire; the 1974 boundary changes transferred the Vale of White Horse to Oxfordshire for administrative purposes.
