Coldwater is a ghost town in Sherman County, Texas. It was the county seat from 1889 to 1901. History The town was founded on a ranch owned by William B. Slaughter, son of C.C. Slaughter. Two years later, in 1893, a newspaper called the ''Sherman County Banner'' was started by Charles Randolph and George Loomis. The post office closed down in 1907. A brickhouse on the ranch was still used as a church until 1940. Coldwater is now the location of the Coldwater gas field. Sherman County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 2,782. Its county seat is Stratford. The county was created in 1876 and organized in 1889. It is named for Sidney Sherman, who fought in the Texas Revolution. Though both Sherman County and Sherman, Texas, are named for the same person, the city of Sherman is located in Grayson County, about 430 miles to the southeast.
