Colab
Colab is the commonly used abbreviation of the New York City artists' group Collaborative Projects, which was formed after a series of open meetings between artists of various disciplines. History Colab members came together as a collective in 1977, first using the name Green Corporation, and initially received a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Workshop Grant through Center for New Art Activities, Inc., a small not-for-profit organization formed in 1974. In 1978, Collaborative Projects was incorporated as a not-for-profit of its own. By raising its own sources of funding, Colab was in control of its own exhibitions and cable TV shows. Advocating a form of cultural activism that was purely artist driven, the group created artworks, negotiated venues, curated shows, and engaged in discourse that responded to the political themes and predicaments of their time, among them the recessions of the 1970s, the Reagan era of budget cuts and nuclear armament, the housing crisis and ...

The Times Square Show
''The Times Square Show'' was an influential collaborative, self-curated, and self-generated art exhibition held by New York artists' group Colab (aka Collaborative Projects, Inc) in Times Square in a shuttered massage parlor at 201 W. 41st and 7th Avenue during the entire month of June in 1980. ''The Times Square Show'' was largely inspired by the more radical Colab show ''The Real Estate Show'' (that occurred in January 1980), but unlike it, was open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in what was then a Times Square full of porno theaters, peep shows, and red light establishments. In addition to experimental painting and sculpture, the exhibition incorporated music, fashion, and an ambitious program of performance and video. The Real Estate Show
The Real Estate Show was a squatted exhibition by New York artists' group Colab, on the subject of landlord speculation in real estate held on New Year's Day (January 1, 1980) in a vacant city-owned building at 123 Delancey Street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. Exhibition The squatting action followed a year of campaigning to rent the property for an exhibition space from officials of the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). On New Year's Day, the show was officially opened to the public. It was to be a two-week occupation/exhibit but was quickly closed down by the police. This brief exhibition went on to inspire a much larger and longer lasting Colab exhibition called ''The Times Square Show''. Coleen Fitzgibbon
Coleen Fitzgibbon (born 1950) is an American experimental film artist associated with Collaborative Projects, Inc. (a.k.a. Colab). She worked under the pseudonym Colen Fitzgibbon between the years 1973-1980. Fitzgibbon currently resides on Ludlow Street in New York City and in Montana. Career history Fitzgibbon was a student of 1960s Structuralist cinema at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Independent Study Program where she studied with Owen Land (aka “ George Landow”), Stan Brakhage, Yvonne Rainer, Carolee Schneemann and Vito Acconci. Fitzgibbon worked on film and sound projects for Dennis Oppenheim, Gordon Matta-Clark and Les Levine. ABC No Rio
ABC No Rio is a collectively-run non-profit arts organization on New York City's Lower East Side. It was founded in 1980 in a squat at 156 Rivington Street, following the eviction of the 1979-80 Real Estate Show. The centre featured an art gallery space, a zine library, a darkroom, a silkscreening studio, and public computer lab. In addition, it played host to a number of radical projects including weekly hardcore punk matinees and the city Food Not Bombs collective. Walter Robinson (art Critic And Artist)
Walter Robinson (aka Mike Robinson, born 1950, Wilmington, Delaware) is a New York City-based painter, publisher, art curator and art writer. He has been called a Neo-pop painter, as well as a member of the 1980s The Pictures Generation. Life and education Robinson was born in Wilmington, Delaware, and raised in Tulsa. He moved to New York City to attend Columbia University in 1968. Subsequently, he graduated from the Whitney Independent Study Program in 1973. Just Another Asshole
Just Another Asshole was a no wave mixed media publication project launched from the Lower East Side of Manhattan from 1978 to 1987. Barbara Ess organized and edited seven issues of Just Another Asshole, which formed thanks to an open, collaborative submission process. Issues 3 and 4 were co-edited by Jane M. Sherry and issues 5 through 7 were co-edited by Glenn Branca. Issue formats include: zine, LP record, large format tabloid, magazine, exhibition catalog, and paperback book. Just Another Asshole #1 and #2: The Zines Barbara Ess edited the first two installments of Just Another Asshole alone; these photocopied zines utilized intermingling high contrast compositions of apocalyptic warnings, celebrity close-ups, helicopters, and tabloids.
