Col Crawford
Colin Frederick Crawford (14 May 1913 – 29 December 2007) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon and Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Career Crawford was a rover and wingman, recruited from Essendon Juniors. He made eight appearances for Essendon in the 1934 VFL season, then in 1935 played 12 league games and represented Victoria against Bendigo. Crawford got a clearance to Fitzroy in 1936 and debuted for the club in the opening round against Carlton. Crawford, who also kept wicket for the Fitzroy Cricket Club, didn't appear again at VFL level and was granted a clearance to Brunswick mid-season. A player-coach (also playing coach, captain-coach, or player-manager) is a member of a sports team who simultaneously holds both playing and coaching duties. A player-coach may be a head coach or an assistant coach. They may make changes to the squad and also play on the team. Very few current major professional sports teams have head coaches who are also players, though it is common for senior players to take a role in managing more junior athletes. The 1941 Victorian Football Association season was the 63rd season of the Australian rules football competition, and it was the last season before the Association went into recess during World War II. The premiership was won by the Port Melbourne Football Club, which defeated Coburg by 19 points in the Grand Final on 4 October. It was Port Melbourne's fifth VFA premiership, and its second in a row. Association membership World War II had commenced in Europe in September 1939, and for the second consecutive season the Association opted to proceed with a full premiership season. Many Association players had enlisted in the war effort, and the Sandringham Football Club elected to operate on an amateur basis for the season. Brunswick Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football League, Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1897 until 1991. Based in Brunswick, Victoria, for most of their time in the Association they were known as the Magpies, and wore black and white guernseys. In its final two seasons in the VFA, it was known as Brunswick-Broadmeadows. History Brunswick Football Club was formed in 1865 and joined the VFA in the 1897 season. The club was colloquially known in its early days as the ''Pottery Workers'' or the ''Brickfielders'', and its fans were known for sounding clayhole bells at matches; after changing their colours from light blue and red colors to black and white, they became informally, and then later formally, known as the Magpies.
