Coinjock Colored School is a historic Rosenwald school building for African-American students located at Coinjock, Currituck County, North Carolina. It was built in 1920, and is a one-story frame, side-gable-roof, two-classroom school building with American Craftsman style design elements. The school was one of three Rosenwald schools built in Currituck County. It housed a school until 1950. Coinjock, North Carolina
Coinjock is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Currituck County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 335. It is located on U.S. Route 158 between Barco and Grandy, about south of the Virginia state line, and is at mile marker 50 on the southern portion of the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal, on the Intracoastal Waterway. Church's Island to the east of Coinjock in the Currituck Sound has a village called Waterlily, which uses the postal address of Coinjock as well. The island's name is due to a decayed church that was once a landmark of the tiny community. Coinjock is bordered by Currituck Sound to the east; the North River lies to the west. Its ZIP Code is 27923. The name ''Coinjock'' is of Native American origin, meaning "the place of the blueberry swamps", referring to the swamp blueberries native to the county. Rosenwald School
The Rosenwald School project built more than 5,000 schools, shops, and teacher homes in the United States primarily for the education of African-American children in the South during the early 20th century. The project was the product of the partnership of Julius Rosenwald, a Jewish-American clothier who became part-owner and president of Sears, Roebuck and Company and the African-American leader, educator, and philanthropist Booker T. Washington, who was president of the Tuskegee Institute. The need arose from the chronic underfunding of public education for African-American children in the South, as black people had been discriminated against at the turn of the century and excluded from the political system in that region. Children were required to attend segregated schools, and even those did not exist in many places. Rosenwald was the founder of the Rosenwald Fund. American Craftsman
American Craftsman is an American domestic architectural style, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, which included interior design, landscape design, applied arts, and decorative arts, beginning in the last years of the 19th century. Its immediate ancestors in American architecture are the Shingle style architecture, Shingle style, which began the move away from Victorian ornamentation toward simpler forms; and the Prairie style of Frank Lloyd Wright. The name "Craftsman" was appropriated from furniture-maker Gustav Stickley, whose magazine ''The Craftsman'' was first published in 1901. The architectural style was most widely used in small-to-medium-sized Southern California single-family homes from about 1905, so that the smaller-scale Craftsman style became known alternatively as " California bungalow".
