Panait Istrati
Panait Istrati (; sometimes rendered as ''Panaït Istrati''; August 10, 1884 – April 16, 1935) was a Romanian working class writer, who wrote in French and Romanian, nicknamed ''The Maxim Gorky of the Balkans''. Istrati appears to be the first Romanian author explicitly depicting a homosexual character in his work. Early life Born in Brăila, Istrati was the son of the laundress Joița Istrate and of the Greek tobacco trader Georgios Valsamis from the village of Faraklata in Kefalonia. He studied in primary school for six years in Baldovinești, after being held back twice. He then earned his living as an apprentice to a tavern-keeper, then as a pastry cook and peddler. In the meantime, he was a prolific reader. Henri Colpi
Henri Colpi (; 15 July 1921 – 14 January 2006) was a French film editor and film director. Early life Colpi graduated from the IDHEC in 1947. During 1950 to 1960, he edited films for such notable French New Wave directors as Agnès Varda and Georges Franju. Career Colpi directed the 1961 film ''Une aussi longue absence'', which is well known for sharing the Palme d'Or at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival with ''Viridiana'', directed by Luis Buñuel. ''Une aussi longue absence'' was written by Marguerite Duras, featured Alida Valli in a major role, and included music by Georges Delerue. It also won the Louis Delluc Prize in 1960. His second feature ''Codine'' was also screening in competition at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival, where Colpi won the prize for Best Screenplay. Mihai Fotino (; 14 September 1930 – 13 January 2014) was a prolific Romanian actor who has appeared in theatre, film, television, and radio, in a career spanning 70 years. Born in Bucharest, he spent his early years in Brașov, where his father, Mișu Fotino, was a stage actor and director, and later graduated from Matei Basarab High School in Bucharest. Fotino made his debut at the age of 6, in 1936, in the play ''Colonial''. From 1952, he became an actor at the in Brașov. He was noticed by the director , who brought him to Bucharest.
