Coco Solo, Panama
Coco Solo was a United States Navy submarine base and naval air station, active from 1918 to the 1960s. History The submarine base at Coco Solo was established May 6, 1918. The site corresponds with modern-day Cativá in Panama. It was on the Atlantic Ocean (northwest) side of the Panama Canal Zone, near Colón, Panama. Five C-class submarines were based there during 1914–1919. United States Senator John McCain was born in 1936 at a small Navy hospital, at Coco Solo Naval Air Station. The larger Coco Solo Hospital was constructed in the summer of 1941. The area containing it was transferred from the civil part of the Panama Canal Zone to the naval part when Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8981 on December 17, 1941. On December 7, 1941, three V-Class submarines (''Barracuda'', ''Bass'' and ''Bonita'') were stationed at Coco Solo. Manzanillo International Terminal (abbreviation: MIT, UN/LOCODE: PAMIT) is located east of the Atlantic opening of the Panama Canal on Manzanillo Bay, Colón Province, Panama. MIT is a distribution center for cargo destined for cities within Panama and nearby countries in Central America and the Caribbean. It is one of the largest container transshipment terminals in the region and has direct access into the Colón Free Trade Zone (CFZ). Galeta Island, Panama
Galeta Island is an island located on the Atlantic side of the Republic of Panama, just east of the city of Colón, Panama. Galeta Island was the site of a U.S. military communications facility from the 1930s through 2002, when it was turned over to the government of Panama. The facility included an operations building located in the center of a U.S. Navy AN/FRD-10A(V) antenna array, which is a Circularly Disposed Antenna Array (CDAA) also known as a Wullenweber array. The island was shared with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), which still maintains a research facility on the island. U.S. military activity ceased on the island after 2002, while tropical research continues in a separate facility located just east of the former communications facility. Fort Randolph (Panama)
Fort Randolph in Panama was a Coast Artillery Corps fort built to defend the northern end of the Panama Canal in conjunction with Fort Sherman. History Fort Randolph was built on Margarita Island which had been connected to the mainland by a railway causeway, so that the eastern breakwater of Limon Bay could be built. Like most of the Panama forts, construction began in 1913 and the breakwater was complete in 1916. The fort itself was completed on 9 April 1920 and named after Major General Wallace F. Randolph.
