Cocky (mascot)
Cocky is the costumed mascot of the University of South Carolina athletics teams. He represents a cartoon version of a gamecock (a fighting rooster). Although the Gamecock has been the University of South Carolina's official symbol since 1902, there was no official mascot until 1971. Instead, during the early years, fans would dress up in their own costumes during the games. Beginning in 1971, John Nelson, an undergraduate biology student, attended games in a Gamecock costume. This mascot was known as "The Rooster". The costume included fabric feathers, a cardboard bill, and Styrofoam spurs, and was made by his mother. The Rooster attended both basketball and football games. "The Rooster" costume can be seen at USC's McKissick Museum. Dr. John Nelson can still be found at USC. He is currently the Curator of the University of South Carolina Herbarium, and plans to retire in 2018. A cockfight is a blood sport, held in a ring called a cockpit. The history of raising fowl for fighting goes back 6,000 years. The first documented use of the ''word'' gamecock, denoting use of the cock as to a "game", a sport, pastime or entertainment, was recorded in 1634, after the term "cock of the game" used by George Wilson, in the earliest known book on the sport of cockfighting in ''The Commendation of Cocks and Cock Fighting'' in 1607. Frank Joseph McGuire (November 8, 1913 – October 11, 1994) was an American basketball coach. At the collegiate level, he was head coach for three major programs: St. John's Red Storm men's basketball, St. John's, North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball, North Carolina, and South Carolina Gamecocks men's basketball, South Carolina, winning over a hundred games at each. Miami Maniac
The Miami Maniac (often shortened to just The Maniac) is the official mascot of the University of Miami baseball program at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Sebastian the Ibis is the official mascot of the Miami Hurricanes sports program except for its college baseball program, which is represented by Miami Maniac, the team's mascot, who performs at University of Miami baseball games. Created in 1982 by visionary College Baseball Hall of Fame head coach Ron Fraser in 1982 and originally performed by John Routh, the Miami Maniac has been a constant at Mark Light Field ever since. Southeastern Conference Mascots
The points of the compass are a set of horizontal, radially arrayed compass directions (or azimuths) used in navigation and cartography. South Carolina Gamecocks
The South Carolina Gamecocks represent the University of South Carolina in the NCAA Division I. The University of South Carolina uses "Gamecocks" as its official nickname and mascot. While the men's teams were traditionally known as the Fighting Gamecocks and the women's teams were previously known as the Lady Gamecocks, this distinction was discontinued in part to eliminate any gender bias in the athletic department and in part to counter misconceptions about the gamecock mascot endorsing bloodsport. All of the University's varsity teams compete at the Division I level of the NCAA, and all but men's soccer and women's beach volleyball compete in the Southeastern Conference. Men's soccer competes in the Sun Belt Conference and women's beach volleyball competes in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association because the SEC does not sponsor those sports.
